Just Georgie

While we hosted Georgie I was still under the weather, but I managed to muster enough energy and strength to do a mini-photo shoot. These are some of the fruits of that labor. Georgie is very photogenic, and he was a very agreeable model once he realized the camera wasn’t anything to be afraid of. Luckily my photo assistants, namely Lily, showed him quickly how it’s done.

One fun tidbit share: Lily used to be terrified of the photo shoots; she was always last to get on the pedestal and always the first to get off. However, this last time she was first to get on and I had to beg her to stay off long enough so we could shoot a few solos of Georgie. Even after I turned off the lights Lily would just hang around on the mark waiting for me to come back (even though I made no promise or plan to do so). It’s amusing to me how quickly they become very comfortable with the camera and lights. Those group photos will follow tomorrow, but today enjoy just Georgie in all of his glory.

Go Georgie go

Continuing with our featured dachshund of the week; these photos show Georgie leading the charge. We’ve known Georgie for almost a year now and he loves to chase the big dogs opposite of the chain-link fence at dog parks. As many of you know, the pack mentality is strong in the dachshund breed so… what one does, the others will often follow. My pack is usually indifferent to the big dogs adjacent to their small dog section, but not with Georgie around. He starts a game of chase and all of mine quickly join him. Enjoy the photos dachshund friends.

Georgie the gentle giant

We recently hosted Gerogie, the gentle giant. We call him that because at a solid 17 pounds he quickly dwarfs my dachshund pack of miniatures. For perspective Lily and Georgie are roughly the same age. Lily was weighed last week during our monthly maintenance visit to the vet (nails, anal glands, flea medicine application, etc) and she is a whopping 7 pounds at an estimated 10 months now. Georgie is really submissive though and quickly yields to whomever – dachshund or human. Out of my pack Lily and Georgie got along the best – probably because they’re most similar in age and energy, but she totally dominated him. It was fun to see, and I’m glad they enjoyed each other’s company. Lily truly likes other small dogs more than other humans (at the moment); Emily was the same way at her age. Enjoy the pictures and stay tune for more of Georgie this week.

One of Rufus’ favorites things to do is to jump on my leg and look up adoringly with those big, round, bright brown eyes. How can I ever say no to this little man. Those floppy ears, that coal button nose and those eyes all just melt my heart each and every time. What do you think?! Make it a great one dachshund friends.

The final installment to our Emily and Lily beach day vignette series. As you can see the two had a lot of fun running freely on the beach while I carefully kept watch. Love my girls. Have a wonderful day friends.

Emily beach weekend

Continuing with yesterday’s Emily beach theme, we add Lily to the mix today. Lily is a shy dachshund – especially when it comes to meeting new dogs and people, but she’ll happily follow Emily and Rufus anywhere. In these pictures my little miniature dachshunds look super small on this patch beach, but I absolutely love the emotion. I see happiness and a father’s pride as his little girls play without a worry in sight. Make it a great day friends.

***Also as a polite reminder, if you’re looking at the photos on your computer remember you can click on the images to make them bigger so you can fully appreciate the complete composition of each photo. ***

Emily makes me happy

When I take pictures I try to capture an emotion in that moment. When I’m editing those same pictures later I try to select those that best represent the feeling that I or we (as in my photo subjects) were experiencing at that time. These photos I’m sharing today are from earlier this week during a mid-afternoon beach excursion. The photos are not my traditional style in the sense that I personally would like to have a more up and close shot of the action. Nonetheless, there’s no denying it, Emily was having a great time. Emily has really evolved in these last two years, and it warms my heart to see her freely running after sea birds and boldly diving into the Pacific Ocean. This same dog a few years earlier was a lot more reserved and cautious, but we continue to work with her and I think it shows in her confidence today. I love helping other dogs and their humans, but I feel like before I can properly help others I have to get my pack in order and Emily (and Rufus) affirms that for me. Now I just have to spend the next year and half working with Lily. I do believe it take a good 2 years to properly train a dachshund and I’m happy to do the work when I’m able to see the payoff so clearly on days like this past Wednesday. Emily’s self-assurance and poise makes me smile big. She can still be a little shy at times, but I’m so proud of her progress. I love my Emmy. Enjoy the pictures friends and let me know if you can feel that feeling I’m talking about.

RIP Max and Baxter

Max | April 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Max | April 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Yesterday our community loss two wonderful dachshunds: Max and Baxter. The only silver lining in their passing is that both dachshunds lived very long and full lives. Both darling dachshunds were featured in the book for charity 102 Dachshunds.

If any fan, friend or fellow-doxie human wants to make a tax-deductible donation in Max’s and/or Baxter’s name a personalized condolence postagram will be mailed to his family. I especially like these postagrams because the photo pops out of the postcard, which makes for a great keepsake. When our doxies pass, all we have are our memories and pictures. With your help Max’s and Baxter’s family can have a few more pictures. My only request, in order to make it cost efficient for the charity, please ensure your donation is $10 or more which includes original artwork, postage, delivery and labor.

Rest in peace friends. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Hunting rabbits x2

Rufus | February 2014. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

The early dachshund get his rabbit, or at least gets to see it. Earlier today with the early morning fog still lingering Rufus was fixed on two invading rabbits. I can only imagine what was racing through my little hunter’s mind, but each time the rabbits would run left Rufus would run to the front door (which happens to be left of the window). Have a good day dachshund friends.

My dachshund nursemaids

Lily, Emily & Rufus | February 2014. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

I’m not feeling well. I have a bad head cold, and I’m so very grateful for my three very alert nursemaids: Rufus, Emily and Lily. They’re all lovingly concerned and they all stay close, but the one who is the most attentive is absolutely Rufus. He is right by my side the whole time. He’ll leave for short breaks to eat or go outside, but he always comes right back without any coaching from me. He is such a sweet boy. Have a wonderful day dachshund friends.
