The squirrels have been taunting Rufus all summer and his obsession has worried me. Then this morning he snagged himself a squirrel. Yep. One dead squirrel. I never would wish harm to another living being, but in that moment as I saw him prancing with his prize in his mouth and Milo following by his side, I was filled with disgust and pride. I was grossed out by the dead rodent in his mouth, but I could see him beaming with self-gratification that all of his months of chase finally paid off. It was truly an odd feeling for me. For the rest of the afternoon the yard was quiet, but I doubt the squirrels will stay away long-term, but perhaps they’ll be a little more careful about how close to the ground they come.

Rufus got to do what doxies are meant to do, hunt. And he caught his hunt, finally! I don’t like to see things get killed either but a squirrel is throwing nuts at Emily’s step sister. Little bratty squirrels. Rob made me stop feeding the birds because the dogs were catching them and killing them.
Congrats Rufus! Our 3 do everything but stack up piggy back to get to them in the yard! They are also obsessed with them. They stretch so far to try to climb the trees and the squirrels just laugh at them! Sorry to see Mr Squirrel dead but I agree with Joy. Those Squirrels are messing with hunters and somebody got too cocky with Mr Rufus and “SNAP”! Just like Mr Alligator! 😛
My Dori is also obsessed with squirrels along with all manner of small varmisnts & critters ( yes, including a baby bunny, now that made me cry) , which doxies are hardwired to hunt. As hard as it is to see her hunt & kill them, it is part of her DNA & to be expected, still…..
Sophie has a serious obsession with squirrels as well. Before she hurt her back, I used to worry that she would catch one, but she never did. Her wheels haven’t slowed her down that much, but I think the squirrels in our backyard are a little safer now. Poor squirrel, but go Rufus! I’m sure he was proud of himself.
Rufus! So cute, so badass!
