Sophie is one of the most beautiful longhairs I have ever met, and those luscious locks come at a cost. She is brushed daily, professionally groomed regularly and travels with her own comb at all times. You can run your fingers through her luxurious mane effortlessly as a testament to the many hours dedicated to her beauty regimen. And she can get fussy when some debris gets caught in her coat; she’ll stop in her tracks until it’s removed.

Sophie and Rufus have been friends for many years now and last night we had a play date while her mom attended a local concert for a few hours. Although we’re old friends, Sophie still took the occasion to whine a little – just in case there was any doubt that she missed her mom. Dachshunds certainly have very strong personalities. They know what they want and they know what they like. Does Sophie remind you of any other dachshunds you might know?!? Have a great day dachshund friends.

*** The video of Sophie is her whining at regular speed and in slow motion. Her whines in slow motion remind me of a whale’s song. ***

Sitting pretty

Helen | 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Today we want to talk about another distinctively dachshund characteristic: sitting pretty. This is when a dachshund sits on his hind legs and goes from completely horizontal to vertical. We DO NOT recommend or encourage people to teach their dachshunds this trick, and we also agree that we should in fact discourage it – as a habit or practice. However, many times this is something dachshunds do inherently. We never taught Rufus this trick, yet he naturally does it on his own (as of now Emily and Lily do not). It is super cute when he does it – despite the fact that it’s bad for his back, and he often does it unexpectedly without any encouragement from us. He usually does it when he wants something, and I’m very good about putting him pack in a horizontal position right away.

As a photographer I’ve naturally captured the fleeting moment for posterity; I have a pretty fast shutter finger. Now, I’ve been consistently sharing original photographs with the dachshund loving public for nearly three years, and each time I share a “sitting pretty” photo some folks get upset. I understand their concern, they don’t want us to perpetuate this bad habit in our community. I get it. Be that as it may, it is something that exists in our community – naturally, and to NOT share the photos, in my opinion, is to deny part of our famous hound dogs. I mean it’s a prominent dachshund characteristic. Is it not better to share the photo and have a conversation about the practice vs. pretending it doesn’t exist (because it does)!?!? What do you think dachshund friends?!? To me, this is like one of those things you see on TV that requires a special disclaimer – please don’t try this at home. Let us know what you think. To share or not to share these potentially controversial photos??! We’re very curious to hear what our friends think.

Distinctively dachshund

Do you think a dachshund’s face is distinctive?! I do. I can’t really explain why, because although most dogs have eyes, ears and a nose (some longer than others); not all are alike. When I see a dachshund’s face to me it’s a very notable style of attractiveness. I think many folks consider the body of a dachshund to be distinguished (and I agree), but when I look into a dachshund’s eyes I see something staring back at me that lets me know it’s a sausage hound. What do you think!?! Let us know below in the comments or on our DOGS Facebook page.

I wonder if other dog people truly enjoy watching theirs sleep as much as dachshund people do. I think watching our darling dachshunds sleep is so relaxing and peaceful. To see them sleep really makes me so happy and my heart full. How about you!?

After a tough 24 hours, Emily is well. If you haven’t been following along on DOGS’ Facebook page, Emily was taken to the vet yesterday and digital radiographs showed a possible blockage. We elected to wait 24 hours and see if she should could pass it naturally. Last night was long and Emily was visibly uncomfortable most of the evening, and we were preparing for the worse today. Then early this morning Emily passed the apricot seed, and the vet confirmed she was all clear and given a clean bill of health. It was such a relief to finally exhale. While I was waiting for Emily to get better, I looked through some of my favorite pictures of her from yesteryear and came across these. We’re so grateful Emily is well again. Thanks to all for their positive, healing thoughts and encouraging, kind words. Your support is always appreciated. Have a wonderful day dachshund friends.
