It’s one of your favorite doxie trios: Rufus, Emily and Lily. Today it was a nice cool 73 degrees and it finally felt like fall in Southern California. We celebrated the occasion with a 2 and a half mile hike up the mountain. From ours to yours, have a wonderful day dachshund friends.

We’ve been a little preoccupied this week with Lily. She was vomiting with diarrhea on Sunday. On Monday we visited our trusted vet bright and early and got a fluid pack, some antibiotics, probiotics and cerenia tablets. The vomit luckily stopped on Monday morning, but not before I laundered varied dog beds and blankets twice. Her appetite didn’t return until Tuesday and then left again Wednesday. Luckily she seems to have it back today (Thursday); the boiled chicken helped though she did even uncharacteristically shy away from chicken those first two days. Her energy levels were low and she was very lethargic most of the week, but today she seems to be closer to normal. She’s a shy and shaky dog to begin with, but when she’s not feeling well it just seems more intense for me because I’m unsure if those shakes are from regular excitement or pain. Lily is a petite, fragile-looking 7 pound dachshund. At that weight, I treat her a little more like porcelain than the others because I worry how much her little body can handle at a time. I’m happy to report that the rollercoaster of a week is almost at an end. I don’t want to be premature but finally, she seems healthier and happier. Let’s just hope it’s here to stay, and we can resume our focus on more fun things like the weekend. We’re not certain of the cause. The other two are perfectly fine and normal. We did visit the beach twice late last week so we think perhaps she ate something she shouldn’t have. Dachshunds always keep us busy.

Lily is a runner. She’s fast and it’s a thrill to see her go. She takes after Rufus. Lily especially loves to play chase with Emily. I love getting those action shots of her running because she makes some funny facial expressions. It sincerely looks like she’s smiling in the photos. What do you think dachshund friends!? I’m little late to the party, but I wanted to be certain to chime in with my opinion. Wednesday, Oct. 1st, was National Black Dog Day. I believe I first became aware of statistics four or five years ago: that black dogs (along with cats) are not adopted as easily as other colors and are often among the first to be euthanized. It’s heart breaking to imagine, and as a proud papa of a black and tan dachshund I must say some of the reasons why black dogs are usually overlooked are absurd to me. The three mains reasons I’ve heard include: 1) the black color is evil; 2) black dogs don’t photograph well and 3) black dogs look scary because their facial expressions are not as easily visible.
Wow. For me, all three reasons are the furthest from the truth. Let’s take Emily Sue as an example. Emily is the antithesis of evil; she’s so super sugary sweet she’ll cause a toothache. She photographs exceptionally well; the camera absolutely loves her! And, her big round and bright eyes pop in that sea of black; I always know how Emily feeling with just a look. If you’re considering a new pet, don’t discount the color black. What do you think dachshund friends?! In my experience, our community loves the classic black and tan coloring. Let’s make this Thursday our get up and move with your dachshund(s) day. It’s a great preamble to the weekend and any excuse to do something physical with your happy hot dog(s) is good in my book. Walk, hike, run, swim – just move and move together. Dachshunds are greater motivators to get us humans moving. I particularly enjoy seeing their wiggle butts in action. It’s our favorite time of the week again – Wiener dog Wednesday, and here are three of my favorite hot dogs: Rufus, Emily & Lily. I love to take posed portraitures of my hounds, but I also like it when I am able to capture them in their natural state. These are my sausage dogs doing what they do best. Lily is so funny. The other day I had to take her to the vet for a vaccine and since she was the only one who needed it, I thought it would be a fun outing for just us two. Unfortunately, she was so nervous and shaking like a leaf. My heart ached for her. She truly enjoys being with her pack and feels safest when they’re around. She’s only one year old so I’ll continue to work with her and build her confidence, but as the pictures demonstrate, Lily feels at home by Rufus’ (or Emily’s) side. Thanks dachshund friends.
