According to Facebook many of my human friends and their children are heading back to school. Meanwhile my doxies and me continue to enjoy the lazy days of summer. Hope it’s a great one friends.

I love my red regal Rufus. He is my shadow, but not like a little brother obnoxious shadow but more like a good friend that is always there. I was organizing the house and cleaning this shelf and Rufus insisted on being right there with me. In fact he climbed in the bookshelf. I honestly don’t know what he was thinking. Perhaps he thought he was helping me, and he did. He made me laugh which is something he does often and well. I naturally had to grab the camera and snap a few shots. Lily is very much like Rufus. Both of my reds follow me all day long all the time. My black and tan, Emily, shows strong signs of a cat-like independence. At night when we’re watching TV, the two reds are right in our laps, but… Emily will go to my office and sleep in her comfortable bed. I love all my doxies but my reds are specials. How about yours!?

Sunday sunbathing

Sundays are best spent sunbathing or at least that’s how my doxies prefer to pass the time. To be completely honest, my two are happy to soak up the sun any and every day.  How about yours?! I believe it’s truly a doxie trait – sun worshipping.

Before Lily

Before Lily there was only two: Rufus & Emily.  I’m certain they enjoy having a temp third, but I do think two is a great number for many doxie households – especially if you’re able to bring two together that are each other’s perfect complement.  I continue to advocate that the first dog is for you and the second one is for the first. I originally wanted Emily’s piebald sister but upon meeting them both, we knew immediately that we couldn’t give in to our own personal vanity. Instead of getting the dog we wanted, we had to get the better dog for Rufus. Emily’s sweet, shy and gentle disposition is the perfect match for Rufus and the two fit like hand and glove today. One of the best decision we ever made; we definitely got the “right” doxie for our family. Expanding one’s pack is a paramount decision; it’s a huge emotional and financial commitment which should not be taken likely – specifically with this complex breed. Each time I see them together, as seen in these photos, I smile big knowing we did good.

Let’s play a game. What caption would offer these two photos?? I think both featured picture show a very animated doxie duo, but the question is what has gotten them worked up??  I’ll get the game started. From my crazy, imaginative mind I see the top photo as Emily and Rufus attempting to warn someone about something.  Perhaps they are yelling at a human across the street about to step in some dog poop that an irresponsible person and dog failed to cleanup. In the bottom one, Emily looks sly with her smirk. I suspect she’s trying to secretly convince Rufus of something without me noticing it.  Well… only they know what they were thinking at the time of the photo shoot, but it’s certainly entertaining to guess. Make it a great one friends and don’t forget to do something fun with your dachshund(s) this weekend.

Doxie pack

Here is my current temp pack with foster pup Lily and my permanent doxie pack featuring everyone’s favorite dynamic duo: Rufus & Emily. I love them all madly and dearly.

I’ll also offer a fun Lily share as we all continue to get to know her personality. She already appears to be a very smart doxie. Lily sleeps in the bed because although she is still undergoing house training (which is coming along very nicely most days) she has demonstrated trust about not peeing or pooping in it. This was most evident last night. Sometime in the middle of the night Lily got up and went to the study adjacent to the master bedroom. I didn’t notice her leaving, but I caught her returning. I got up to notice she somehow turned on the floor lamp but I didn’t see anything out of place – though admittedly I was still half asleep. I made a mental note to check more thoroughly in the morning and returned to bed. In the light of day I found a poop present Lily had left, but I couldn’t be mad because at least she had the good sense to leave the bed and bedroom so not to disturb our sweet slumber. I thought that was very considerate. Moreover, I was most impressed with her ability to turn the lamp on, as though she was putting a spotlight on it just for me.

I say it often and mean each time; life with dachshunds is never dull or boring and I could never imagine my life without one. They make me laugh and smile daily. Don’t you agree?! Have a good one friends.

Lily’s log: day 18

Monday marked 18 days of living with Lily. It was also time for her next round of shots, and a checkup by our local vet: Ojai Village Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Sallen said she looks great. In these short two and a half weeks, Lily has put on two pounds and is now a healthy 6 pounds. The office staff commented that Lily had grown (they met her a week earlier during a meet and greet). It’s sometimes difficult for me to notice her progress since I see her daily. When I got Lily she had very few baby teeth (like maybe 2-4, leading me to believe she was younger than 3 months). Dogs are born without teeth and their puppy teeth show up around 6-8 weeks old. I believe Lily was about 6 weeks old when I got her (contrary to her shelter paperwork and guesstimate). Today she has a mouth full of sharp puppy teeth. She is not a big chewer yet, but I predict it’s forthcoming in the days ahead. I have also been practicing with leaving Lily in the crate at home while I run quick and short errands. She whines at first, but I always come home to a quiet house – which is a good sign. She absolutely loves her dog bag and is an excellent travel companion.  Everyone at the vet’s office was very impressed by how “at home” she appears in it. Lily enjoys car rides and doesn’t appear to suffer from any car sickness. Lily’s future human should know she does snore (like Emily), but I find it very endearing. It’s amazing that such loud sounds can come from such a small-bodied being. She continues to love a good lap and appears to be a very alert doxie puppy. Her house training is coming along nicely and her accidents inside have become a lot less as of late. On day 18 we had no accidents, but I know the process ebbs and flow so I’m cautiously optimistic. Lily started off sleeping in the crate (as all of my doxies do – permanent and fosters) but once she demonstrated that she could be trusted to not pee on the bed she quickly graduated to it with the rest of the pack; she’s a great snuggle bug. Whoever ends up with Lily will be a very lucky family. By all accounts she seems to be a very happy dachshund, and I dare say she’s even smiling in the bottom picture to prove it.

My girl

Lest we forget, Emily is my little girl. Lily has truly stolen our hearts and we love her dearly, but Ms. Emily Sue already had mine. The “new” of a precious puppy is fun, but I have my girl. Emily. Emmy. Em. I say she’s the dog’s bark around these parts.
