I love my red regal Rufus. He is my shadow, but not like a little brother obnoxious shadow but more like a good friend that is always there. I was organizing the house and cleaning this shelf and Rufus insisted on being right there with me. In fact he climbed in the bookshelf. I honestly don’t know what he was thinking. Perhaps he thought he was helping me, and he did. He made me laugh which is something he does often and well. I naturally had to grab the camera and snap a few shots. Lily is very much like Rufus. Both of my reds follow me all day long all the time. My black and tan, Emily, shows strong signs of a cat-like independence. At night when we’re watching TV, the two reds are right in our laps, but… Emily will go to my office and sleep in her comfortable bed. I love all my doxies but my reds are specials. How about yours!?

  1. We found our red doxie, Eli, when we were looking for a companion to keep our 2 year old beagle/rat terrier Penny Lane, company. While searching for another beagle mix we came across a video of Eli in a little argyle sweater chasing toys with the other dogs in his foster family. We immediately fell in love and submitted an application. He has been with us for a little over a year now and our lives have been changed so much for the better. He is a great snuggler and a wonderful little companion. His temperament has been perfect for our beagle mix and we both agree that our household will never be without a dachshund now that we have had the pleasure of being loved by one.

Gretchen is my first longhaired Doxie and my first chocolate and tan. Before Gretchen I always had Reds. In the summer they would sun themselves and their beautiful red coats would lighten up. Doxies have strong personalities and are often called stubborn. Some Doxies just have to see what their humans are doing while others tend to get right in there and…help? Rufus sounds like he wanted to be close to his human Dad for a snuggle. I remember a red horse that had to be right there watching me. I was moving a group of tree branches and Glory watched my every move. She walked back and forth as I did when making a pile of the branches. She just had to be right there watching everything. Doxies can be stubborn as can a horse but Doxies sometimes can hold a grudge. Horses just do not want to do things and can be sometimes tricked into doing what we want them to. Doxies can think, plot and plan! Especially the reds. Perhaps the reds are different because of the lack of the breeding that was done to otherwise get long or wirey coats.?

  3. My two reds are females and yes, very stick to me close !. I hold them in my lap in the morning while trying to read the newspaper ,drink my coffee and get my other two to sit quietly while they are upset at their sisters for taking up my lap. Sometimes I try to hold all 4…not easy but we try.
