Celebrating Milo’s human

Today is Milo’s human’s birthday so naturally we’re very mindful of our friend and his dachshund. Before there was Emily or Lily, there was Milo. My girls can certainly thank Milo and his human for opening the doxie floodgate. I had known for a while that I wanted a second dachshund (and eventually a third), but it wasn’t until Milo arrived that I had the added incentive to stop thinking about it and just do it. We miss Milo terribly, and today we happily celebrate the birth of his human. Both Milo and his human have been very positive influences in our lives, and we’re sincerely grateful both were born. Our lives and the world is a better place because they’re in it. Today’s photos are from Milo’s debut in July 2011. He was such a cute doxie puppy and excellent friend to Rufus and his humans. Isn’t it lovely how the dachshund continues to bring people together!?

May your Saturday be tranquil and relaxing. Dachshunds certainly know how to play hard and when it’s time to rest and rejuvenate. They really know how to sleep, don’t they?! Let’s try to follow their example.

Emily’s hoodie

The temperature is changing, and yesterday I had to pull out some of my dachshunds’ outerwear to see what still fits. It really was not an intentional or planned photo shoot, but while I was trying on a few different things I couldn’t help but snap some shots of Emily being adorable in her hoodie. I’m not sure she likes wearing clothes as much as my reds (Rufus and Lily are pretty indifferent to them) but… she does look cute in clothes. Enjoy friends.

Some days my entries have a clear theme or message, other days the featured photos are just random moments captured. It’s our mission here to entertain and educate, and today it’s just pure pleasure. In the top photo I love Rufus’ strong gaze; I believe a dachshund’s eyes are very communicative. In the bottom picture, I love watching my sleeping and sunbathing hounds. They look so very content. Have a terrific day friends.

Oscar, a plea for help

I’m going to tell you a story and when it’s over you get a chance to help decide how it ends.

Meet Oscar, the 10-year-old black and tan longhair dachshund. Oscar and his littermate and pack buddy, Mayer – a 10-year-old red longhair dachshund, recently relocated from Pennsylvania to California with their human to live and work at one of Ojai’s many boarding schools. Oscar’s human has had the two dachshunds since they were puppies.

One recent afternoon Oscar was chewing on a bone when a dog-loving student attempted to pet him. To which he replied with a bite. The bite broke the skin but did not require stitches; it was considered minor. However, the boarding school officials are forcing Oscar’s human to re-home him due to possible liabilities associated with housing “a potentially aggressive” dog on campus.

Here’s the part where you can help. Oscar’s human is looking for a long-term to possible permanent foster family for her dachshund. She is keeping Mayer. Oscar’s human needs someone to house her dachshund through the end of the school year (November 2013 – June 2014); which is about 8 months. Oscar’s human is willing to cover his expenses during the said 8 months. She is also willing to break up the 8 months into smaller blocks of time between multiple homes and families; though it would be ideal for Oscar if he only had to readjust to ONE family during that period. He is current with his vaccinations and is licensed in Ventura County.

Oscar, like many dachshunds, is that all too common mix of shy, reserved and indifferent around other people and small dogs, and alpha doxie when it comes to toys, bones and big dogs. The ideal situation for Oscar and his human would be someone local to Ojai or the surrounding areas. Oscar can be around another beta, shy and/or female dachshund, but might not do well with another alpha male doxie.

Oscar’s human would enjoy visiting with him from time to time, but absolutely must re-home him by the month’s end. It’s obviously a complex situation. Oscar’s human doesn’t want to “give him up,” but she did also just move across the country for a new job. After the academic year, she’ll have a better idea if she’ll stay for another year or move on to something else.

Can you or someone you know help!?

Oscar’s situation is heartbreaking and really I don’t know what I would do if I were in the same situation, but I did tell Oscar’s human that we are a strong community. I assured her that if anyone could be empathic to her current plight it would be us – her fellow doxie humans. It’s certainly a tall order to fill, but if you know anyone who might be able and willing to rise to the challenge, please contact Oscar’s human (Jen) directly at helpdoxieoscar@gmail.com. The ideal candidate would live in Southern California or near by.

Oscar is a handsome dachshund, and we’re wishing him and his human all the best during this difficult time. Thanks in advance friends for the consideration and please do share today’s post with your network of dachshund friends. I really do hope this story has a happy ending and will be following it closely for new developments.

More Davy Jones

Davy Jones | September 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

It’s the return of Davy Jones. I love his name, and he takes a good picture. Davy Jones is one of our newest friends and I look forward to seeing more of him. Davy Jones’ human said he can be cantankerous around other dogs when we first met, but I assured her many dachshunds often get along just fine with other dachshunds. It’s not my place to understand or explain the science behind it, but I can bear witness to it after years of interacting with so many different dachshunds. They love (or at least tolerate) their own breed. Some dachshunds charge big dogs, others seemingly go after white fluffy dogs and even yet some seem to be put out by the flat-faced breeds, but when a doxie is around another doxie they all seem to get along just fine most of the time. I personally love seeing other dachshunds play with dachshunds. For me it warms the heart and makes me smile big. How about you and yours!?

Yesterday we featured Emily curled up in her crate in a pillowcase. Keeping with the theme of sleeping dachshunds here is more of the girls: Emily and Lily. Love the top photo. Dachshunds always manage to contort themselves in all kinds of odd and entertaining sleeping positions. The bottom photo is simply Lily being precious.

Saturday’s share

My dachshunds love their crate and each of them take turns visiting it throughout the day all on their own. I believe a crate can be a cold cage or it can be a soft, warm and inviting den. I have worked hard to create the latter for my doxie triad. I have included an old foam pillow wrapped in two pillowcases along with multiple soft blankets. What tickles me pink these days is Emily has just recently started to crawl in one of the two pillowcases enveloping the foam pillow, much like a person would do with a sleeping bag, and I love it. It is a fun sight to see and I’m happy to share it with you today. We all know doxies love to burrow as Emily clearly continues to demonstrate. How about your doxie(s)?! Are they burrowers?!

Polite reminder: only two days left to pre-order your DOGS Fall 2013 T-shirt. The pre-order period closes at midnight PST on Sunday, 10/6. I will only be ordering 20 of each longhair design and 10 of the smooth reprint. That’s not a lot of inventory so if you know you want one, I strongly encourage you do get yours now at the discounted donation price point. I’m certain they’ll go fast in November.

Happy Belated Birthday Bailey

Our friend Bailey, the red smooth dapple dachshund, turned 12 this past Saturday and we wanted to wish her a very Happy Belated Birthday! I love a white face dachshund. I think it’s an accomplishment and testament for both human and dachshund of a long-lived life. Bailey may you live another 12 years. I pick the top photo, because I think the key to a long and happy life is not to take any of it too serious, as Bailey so politely reminds us with her fun expression. The other photos are just Bailey serving up pure dachshund cuteness. I’m sorry our tribute is a little late, but we hope it was a great one. Bailey and her pack mate, Onslow, are featured in our book 102 Dachshunds. Get your autographed copy today if you don’t already have yours.
