Our new dog bag

I’m a big advocate for bag training dachshunds. For me the breed (of miniature dachshunds) is perfectly compact and appropriate for travel via car, plane and boat. Not to mention those days when it’s just easier to put a dachshund in a bag and go. Some days I want to enjoy the company of my pampered pooch without the added challenge of trying to walk him on a leash in a crowd. Rufus has been all over the country, and I look forward to showing it to Emily and Lily as the opportunity is presented.

For me, all bags are not equal. I’m particular about my bag and will spend a little more to ensure I have something stylist and fun. For me a good dog bag is an investment. If you take care of them they will last, especially when we buy a quality bag. In today’s marketplace that’s easier said than done, and I know because I had to look high and low before I found one. Well, it’s my pleasure to introduce y’all to our new BK Atelier’s “Bridget” carrier. After unsuccessfully trying to locate one in our fine state, I ended up having this one shipped directly from NYC. In addition to the high fashion the bag is 100% vegan. The company’s motto is, “Made for animals not from animals.”

One quick note, although I have a few photos featuring two of my trio in the bag at the same time, I would not recommend putting more than one dachshund in a bag at a time (which is also why I own multiple bags to go along with my multiple dachshunds). Most of the bags I own are only capable carrying 13 to 20 pounds at any one time so… for the purpose of pictures they look cute in there together, but in reality it’s not practical (or at least I don’t recommend putting more weight than the manufacture specifies). Okay. I’m also a fan of word of mouth referrals and here’s our latest endorsement. If you’re in the market for a new bag consider BK Atelier carriers; we’re fans. Our friend Milo has the Mia bag and his human continues to rave about it a year later.

Looking at these pictures I’m hear Elton John’s song, “Don’t let the sun go down on me.” As the sun sets on another great day we wanted to offer a quick hello to all of our dachshunds friend. Valentine’s Day is only three days away. If you’re still looking for that unique gift for your special Valentine consider our limited edition dachshund collectibles. All dollars raised benefit our breed of choice and are returned to the community via our community outreach efforts.

Emily Monday

Last Monday we featured Lily Monday and one fan suggested that we make it regular thing. Well, we can’t promise Lily Monday will be a thing going forward because we sometimes like to feature Lily on other days of the week but… for the second week in a row by request, it’s Lily Monday. She is really turning into a very beautiful dachshund when she’s not fidgeting. Don’t forget friends, Valentine’s Day is only four short days away. Instead of a traditional gift with a short-shelf life, give the gift of dachshund collectibles and support the premier charity that champions the breed.

Emily’s puppy article

Emily is a rescue that I got when she was only 8 weeks old. Including Emily, I have helped to raise four dachshund puppies to date. In 2012, I wrote an article for the now defunct magazine Doxie Digest about those first 30 days of a puppy’s life and I happily share it with you here and now. I believe it’s a good overview and resource for new dachshund parents. Although the article was written specifically for dachshund puppies (because that was the assignment) I believe a lot of the information can be transferable to bringing home a new dog of any age. Have a wonderful day dachshund friends.

Another lazy weekend

Rufus dares to ask the question, “Do we have to get up today?!” I really don’t pressure my dachshunds to do things they don’t want to do – especially my favorite Rufus. At nearly 10 years old he has earned the right. This morning we went for our regular hike. Emily and Lily both got out of the bed this morning willing and eager to go, but Rufus decided to stay buried under the blankets so we left him behind with dad. Some days we all just need to sleep in and be lazy. With the temperature dropping and the arrival of some drizzle, today is turning out to be a perfect day to be lazily curled up in a warm and fuzzy dog bed. Have a wonderful day dachshund friends.

Rainy days

Lily | February 2014. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Lily | February 2014. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

We got some rain yesterday in sunny SoCal and I manage to get a few pictures of Lily in our “dachshund pack slicker.” We do not endorse or recommend this raincoat because in all honesty it’s the least effective protective gear for our low-riding dachshunds available in the marketplace. I’m certain the jacket does better for long-legged pooches but it offers zero protection to our dachshunds’ undercarriage – and when it’s wet and muddy outside, they especially need shielding down under. But we bought the yellow poncho nearly 10 years ago before I knew better, and… I have photographed both Rufus and Emily in it so it was only natural that I grab a few of Lily in it. It truly looks like she’s wearing a canary yellow trash bag. Hope you enjoy the pictures nonetheless and everyone is keeping dry and warm.

Valentine’s Day promotion

Valentine's Day special tee by Sugar Bear Designs and Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Valentine’s Day special tee by Sugar Bear Designs and Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Candy causes cavities and flowers die. Try giving your sweet Valentine a more substantial gift this year. Make a tax-deductible donation to DOGS and honor the love and bond you hold for each other and for your lovable low-rider. An anonymous source donated some Gildan unisex T-shirts to the charity and working with Sugar Bear Designs we created the special super limited tee only available here to our loyal fans. Here is how it works: 1) Make a $135 tax-deductible donation for a book – 102 Dachshunds and get a shirt for free (a $45 saving). 2) Indicate what size you want: S, L or XL. Special note: we ONLY have 11 shirts – 1 Small, 2 Large and 8 XLarge.

The smooth dachshund design has been our most popular T-shirt to date, and this is our third edition of the design. If you’re collecting them all, grabs yours while you can because once they’re all gone that’s it. We purposefully do not mass-produce our shirts or books to make them collectibles. Since we still have some longhair shirts left, we’ll include them in this 2014 Valentine’s Day promotion. Make a $135 tax-deductible donation between now and Valentine’s Day and get a book + T-shirt (of your choice while supplies last). Your donation includes a 2-days UPS shipping (a $20-$25 value). Also note, as our first-run book inventory depletes, the price will go up. We anticipate the price for the book will be $150 after this promotion going forward. Thank you in advance for the continued support. We can only do what we do with your financial help.

Quick share: I recently wore my new shirt to the VIP reception of the Pussy & Pooch Beverly Hills Pet Lifestyle Center where I received many nice compliments and inquires. Lily also got the chance to get some special face time with the super sweet actress Jane Lynch.

Wirehair Wednesday

Keeping with the theme from yesterday, it’s Griz and her good friends Rufus and Emily. The look of a dachshund conveys so much to us doting dachshund humans. They really can say volumes with their eyes, and I feel like these two photos are communicating all kinds of emotions from these darling long-bodied hounds. What are they saying to you?!
