Last Thursday, June 19 we got word that Sammy the wirehair dachshund had gone to the Rainbow Bridge. These are absolutely my least favorite types of emails to receive, but I’m always touched that their humans contact me and let me know. I consider all of the dachshunds that I’ve photographed over the years friends – no matter if we only met once or several times. Each dachshund leaves an indelible mark on my heart after one of our photo shoots.
Sammy’s human wrote, “He was a great dog. I miss him. I was so lucky to have you photograph Sammy and Sophie.” And really the honor is all mine. I started photographing dachshunds at large in 2011, and I never charge a hosting or sitting fee (like many traditional pet photographers). I want every dachshund human to have at least one professional quality photo of their beloved long-bodied hound dog.
I asked Sammy’s human if she would mind if we paid tribute to Sammy and invite our community to celebrate him and his memory. To which she replied, “I would love it if you would do a tribute for Mr. Sammy. We miss HIM.” And that’s why I do it. Each tribute we’ve done takes several hours of my time to go back and review the archives and edit another set, but how can I not do it?!!? Humans get obituaries, funerals and memorial services so for me it’s only natural that we do something to commemorate the life of a dachshund each time one more is gone.

Apparently Sammy developed cancer. His human opted for surgery and chemo, and thought they were in the clear only to discover he had a mass in his heart. I think it’s particularly hard when it’s one half of a pair. Sammy and Sophie were a darling dynamic duo and according to Sammy’s human, Sophie is naturally a little depressed. They’re considering a new pack mate, and only time will tell what may come, but in the meantime let’s join together and celebrate the life of Sammy.
If any fan, friend or fellow-doxie human wants to make a tax-deductible donation in Sammy’s name a personalized condolence postcard will be mailed to his family. I especially like these because they make for a great keepsake. When our doxies pass, all we have are our memories and pictures. With your help Sammy’s family can have a few more pictures. My only request, in order to make it cost efficient for the charity, please ensure your donation is $10 or more which includes original artwork, postage, delivery and labor. I do believe these postcards are better and more personalized than a casserole or flowers.
Rest in peace Sammy. You will be missed but never forgotten.
