Hello friends. As you may (or may not) remember from some of our social media postings, Rufus finally got his anesthetic teeth cleaning on Wednesday, March 13. Yay!!!

He was denied on February 12th, a month earlier, due to concerns with his kidney. Last year (February 2018 during his last annual aesthetic teeth cleaning), he was diagnosed with Stage I kidney disease. It naturally has progressed (as one might expect) in the year since we last officially checked it.

We were thrilled to get Rufus’ teeth cleaning done by our good and gifted friend and canine dental specialist Robert Furman in Santa Barbara. We originally were going to have to wait til April, but thankfully due to a cancellation we got in sooner. #Grateful

Unfortunately when we examined Rufus’ mouth we found a growth on his lip line. Dr. Furman happily removed it, but being safe we sent it in for a biopsy. And one week later, like he promised, Dr. Furman called us with the results. Unfortunately, the results weren’t good. The growth was melanoma. Dr. Furman believes he got it all out, but one can never be sure.

According to the PetMD…

Oral melanomas also have a high chance of metastasizing (spreading) to other parts of the body. The most common locations for melanoma to spread are lymph nodes within the head and neck, and the lungs. Certain breeds are more likely to develop melanoma tumors than others, including poodles, dachshunds, Scottish terriers, and golden retrievers.

There’s a vaccine we can give Rufus, but it’s pretty expensive. At this time we remain undecided how we’ll proceed. What measure(s) we will or won’t take.

So here’s our dilemma. Rufus has had a great life. He’s nearly 15 (August 21, 2019); some dogs don’t ever get that many years so we’re grateful for each one. Rufus is a very well-travelled hound. Some humans would be lucky to have lived the life of this happy hound dog. ❤ We want to ensure Rufus’ last days, months or years are comfortable and posh, but I want him to have the freedom to leave this plane and transition to the next when he’s ready, whenever that day comes.

We’re not pessimists (by any means). But I do consider us to be realists. We hope Rufus will prove us wrong and be around for many more years to come – nothing would make be happier, but realistically his time (and our time together) is limited. I think Rufus’ time here is coming to an end. We’re in the final stretch of road certainly, we just don’t know how much road is left (yet). I personally believe we have between 6 and 24 months left. That’s my intuition. We personally have to acknowledge this possibility so we can prepare emotionally, so I can prepare emotionally. ❤

Now my question to YOU reading this Sunday share / Rufus update is… IF you knew the end was near(ish), how would you spend the final days / months / years with your best canine companion!??! #InquiringMindsWantToKnow

I’ve been asking myself that question a lot lately. And our family has decided that I won’t travel without Rufus, which means my overall travel this year will be significantly less. I’m going to stay home and stay close to our boy, because my singular clear commitment to Rufus during this uncertain time is that I want to be here with him. I want to be here when he takes his last breath; I know if I wasn’t that would be huge regret for me.

I also want to take a lot more pictures. I want to go on more adventures together. I want visit more (if not all) SoCal beaches, dog parks, resume our regular neighbor walks, take hikes, etc. I want to spoil Rufus. I want ensure Rufus’ last days / months / year are pretty spectacular. And I’m happy to bring you all along for the ride, if you want come.

I also welcome your suggestions and thoughts. Rufus is my first dog as an adult and this all is a first for me. I’ve have helped to raise four precious puppies, but this will be my first time to lose one of those puppies I raised. So although I consider myself a very well read person on all things dachshund, I will be experiencing this first hand for the first time. ❤ And for me, it helps to talk about it candidly with our community.

Okay friends. Although this share may seem a little gloom and doom, in truth we’re all doing pretty good under the circumstances. We remain of good cheer and continue to enjoy our daily cuddles, naps and sunbathing poolside. Proof is in the pictures. We’re celebrating each day as a gift, and encourage you to do the same. If you got them, hug them and spoil them, because why else have them if you’re not. 🙂

Rehoming Dachshund alert

Update: Saturday, March 23, 2019 5:05 pm CST — We have received a lot of interest in Remy already and the person overseeing the rehoming is a little overwhelmed. Therefore, we’re removing the number for now. They’re going to take some time to sort through the current interested parties, and if none of them workout, we’ll publish the number again. Thanks! Good news. 🙂

Attention friends. If you’re in the Southern California area, we have an adorable darling dachshund looking for a new home. His current humans are dealing with some extreme health concerns, and they believe this young pup needs more attention they can currently offer. ❤ It’s sad for them to say goodbye, but kudos to them for putting the pooch’s needs first and recognizing their current limitations. #ResponsibleGuardianship ❤

It’s our pleasure to introduce Remy, the longhair cream male dachshund. Remy will be celebrating his 2nd birthday in May. Remy originally hails from breeders in Canada, and weighs about 8 pounds. He’s a true miniature dachshund, and from what I’ve seen has a very sweet disposition. He’s leash and potty trained and is wonderful in public. Remy would probably do best in an environment without small children (since he doesn’t have much exposure to them) and would probably like being part of a family with an existing dachshund pack (but not a mandate). ❤ Those people with dachshunds now or previously will be given preferable attention. 🙂

There is a rehoming fee, and in the event that Remy doesn’t workout, he must be returned, and not taken to a shelter or transferred to another human.

We’ll let the pictures speak for Remy, especailly those sweet eyes and regal constitution. But as avid and experienced dachshund human, I’ll leave those reading with these final thoughts.

I know many of us love puppies, and there’s much to be desired about getting a puppy. There is ALSO much work involved in raising a puppy, more than I think the average person is really prepared to give (or realize). We sometimes forget about those sleepless night and destruction that too often accompanies puppyhood. I continue to be advocate for friends rescuing a slightly older dog, like a two-year. I think accepting a two-year canine companion, allows you to avoid some of the potential pitfalls of puppyhood, but they’re still young enough to be molded to your family. Food for thought friends.

Lastly. If our situation was different. If Rufus was younger and in better health, I’d happily snatch up Remy for myself, which I believe is the best compliment / endorsement I can offer. ❤ Let my loss be your gain. I hope Remy finds a family that will worship him like the King, I think he is. ❤

RIP Sophie, the longhair dachshund

Yesterday, as I was about to depart for a friend’s birthday party, I got a text from another friend. It was the somber news that our sweet, dear darling dachshund friend Sophie, the longhair, had passed suddenly. Sophie’s humans are suffering an enormous loss. They speculate that Sophie experienced a rupture of a heart chamber. Thankfully, in my opinion, Sophie died in her human’s arms. ❤

I share the context in which I received the news, because in a matter of minutes, our world can change. As I was about to leave and celebrate the life of a human friend, I received the news of the passing of a dachshund friend. #Heartbreaking

We met Sophie as a puppy and watched her blossom from a rambunctious ball of fur, to a gracefully (but still silly) gorgeous longhair dachshund — with a mane that made many humans and hounds envious. She was a great ambassador for our breed.

I never really know which is better, to leave this world suddenly (with hopefully little pain) or a long farewell where we slowly transition from this one to the next. I think both have their benefits and sorrows.

It’s hard to know what to write in a time of deep heartache and pain. All I can think to say and do, is to encourage those of us who knew Sophie, to celebrate the life of a friend through our many cherished memories at our monthly meetups and photos. ❤ I’m so grateful to have photographed this beautiful soul many times. Sophie is among Rufus’ first friends, and she will always have a very special place in our hearts.

Hug them hounds friends, and let’s enjoy every day we’re together. The only crime a dog commits, in my opinion, is they too often leave us too soon.

Happy Thursday

Hello friends. Last week was emotionally rough for us with Rufus’ dental cleaning being denied, but it’s a new week and we’re pushing forward. Life and time stop for no man or dog. Truthfully, we took this week off. After the stress and strain of last week, we just want to have a normal(ish) week. We do have a few outstanding calls to a Dental Specialist for Rufus’ next teeth cleaning attempt (Dr. Richard Furman in Santa Barbara) and we’re going to contact another local vet about some other homeopathic treatments for Rufus. We hope to continue those efforts next week with renewed energy and vigor. Wish us luck!

Rufus, not surprisingly, is doing great to the undiscerning eye. He acts and moves likes he’s the same, happy-go-lucky, precious pup he has always been. 🙂 Gotta love Dogs. ❤ But, we do want to take a few minutes to thank everyone for their lovely comments, support and continued encouragement. Here is Southern California, we’re experiencing some unseasonably arctic cool temperatures, and as a result we’re staying indoors and cuddling more. I’m beginning to feel like sloth, or hibernating bear, but I guess that’s just how it goes this time of year. I like to believe it’s because of the cooler temps that we’re being lazier than usual, but it may also be because I selfishly want to cuddle with our pack of hounds and really appreciate and enjoy them (right now, while I can, before anything changes). #SeizeEachDayEachMoment

That’s the latest and greatest from us. We love you all and thank you all for coming along with us on this journey. We’re celebrating each day we’re together, and hope you and yours are doing the same. 🙂 Love them, hug them and spoil them while we can. ❤ ❤ ❤

Rufus update February 2019

One year ago, Rufus was diagnosed with early stages of Kidney disease. It was heartbreaking. We changed his diet, as advised, and we just kind of put it on a shelf. There isn’t much one can really do (or so we’re told). Over the last year Rufus (at 14 and a half years old) has had some good days and not so good days. Today Rufus went in for his for annual anesthetic teeth cleaning, and the elected procedure was denied. His kidney levels were significantly elevated and our vet worried the anesthesia might comprise his already impaired kidney functions. Heartbreaking for a second time.

We’re awaiting the results of a urine analysis and culture. We have an ultrasound scheduled on Friday to get a complete picture of his kidneys. We’ve been referred to a local specialist for acupuncture and herbal treatment along with some other homeopathic options. We’re under no illusions, Rufus’ kidneys will be the end of him. We speculate Rufus may have 2 to 4 years with us, and it’s our commitment to make these final years the best and most comfortable we can. ❤

As I’ve said countless times, Rufus has been a great mentor to me. This occasion is no exception. I have had moments of shock, worry and great sadness. But Rufus continues to be a happy-go-lucky, precious pup with no concern for the future and simply celebrates the present. ❤ #LivesInTheMoment ❤

We have not talked publicly (much) about Rufus and his health this last year. But we can certainly use the support and encouragement of our community and friends. Many of you have been there for the several highs we have experienced over the years, so it only seems fitting to include you in our more challenging times.

For all those asking, Lily’s teeth cleaning went better than Rufus’ today, though it did include one extraction. Boo. Emily and Milo go tomorrow (Wednesday). Wish us luck.

Sitting with Santa, a family tradition

Hi friends. I don’t know about y’all, but I have had zero motivation to do anything this holiday season. Ha! 🙂

I mean, we’re totally enjoying it. The house is decorated and festive. And, our time with our family at home has been priceless — we’re loving it on the daily for sure, but… doing much more outside of the house — like holiday parties or special events of any kind, has had zero appeal to me. #Boo 😦

I mean once it gets dark at 5 pm, I’m happy to be home, curled up on the couch with our pack under some faux fur throws with a fire roaring. #TheLife 🙂 I feel like we’re hibernating and waiting for Spring — especially with the rains these last two weeks (which is a BIG deal for a SoCal dude). #WeDontLikeRainandCold Can any of you relate friends??!

Nonetheless, I found some strength today to get out. I had wanted to do this earlier in the month, but finally made it happen today. ❤ Continuing with our family tradition OF NINE YEARS (2010 through 2018), it’s our pleasure to present our 2018 photos with Santa Claus. 🙂 Yay!!! Emily is a well-traveled hound (like her big brother Rufus). She has visited the Carrizo Plain, snowy mountain tops and the beach — to name a few, but her favorite place remains her daddy’s arms. ❤ #SpoiledPup ❤

Admittedly, after posting daily and then weekly, I personally got a little tired of living behind the lens (and at my desk) and wanted to spend some quality time in the moment with my pack, and especially with the aging, greying and distinguished dachshund Rufus. ❤ #GotLoveThemWhileYouGotThem ❤

Thankfully, I have had a family that is super support of my doxrazzie career and dachshund fine art photography. I’m lucky. However, the one condition my family ask is that I try not pay for everything on my own. The cameras, the lights, the costumes, photoshop software, the internet hosting fees, the banking fees for the charity, etc. — all of it adds up each year.

In the past we have used private clients to fund as much of it, as much as I could personally do, and some merchandise campaigns. But otherwise, I just pay for it all. ❤ #StrugglingArtistTrials

We’ll continue to create limited content for free and for the general public consumption, but we’re going to try to create some additional premium content for our loyal supporters. Your support will more importantly provide the motivation and encouragement we need to go on creating. Sometimes, feedback is sparse on cold and impersonal internet, and as an artist I don’t generally enjoy working in a vacuum.

Also, as fan subscriptions grow, we’ll work to secure exclusive deals and discounts with local and approved vendors for our audience. We’ve already done this for y’all in the past, and will continue to do it, as the opportunities come up. 🙂 #WeGiveBack
