In 2012, I photographed about 30 rescue dachshunds. I first met and photographed Ryker (previously Malcolm) in March of last year. He was a diamond in the rough, like so many of these rescue pups I meet. Ryker’s forever family joined our local meetup group, LA Doxies, and I’ve been able to watch him transforms back to a beautiful, healthy and happy longhair dachshund. He really is a handsome fella, I think. Best of all, Ryker runs with his own pack nowadays. He has a brother and sister now which you’ll see in the days ahead.

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of meeting Cooper, a male blue eye, double dapple smooth dachshund, and Ramona, a shy female red sable smooth dachshund. Cooper is spectacular. He is at a good weight with a nice coat and had a seemingly well-adjusted disposition. Poor little Ramona shows serious signs of neglect that it’s heart breaking, but I suspect with some love and attention Ramona can make a come back better than ever. I find it very funny that many dachshunds (who have visited my homes) enjoy climbing the furniture like cats. I provide my pampered pups with pet stairs and in turn access to the couches. But instead of resting on the cushions like humans, my doxies (and often many of their friends) insist on scaling them to the top. I don’t know if it’s the view that attracts them or something else. Do your dachshunds climb on the furniture?!

No matter how many times I do it, I love using high-key lighting to showcase the beauty of dachshunds. High-key lighting in photography theory impacts the mood of the picture. High-key images are often considered happy and upbeat. When it comes to the big personality and unique body of the dachshund, I think the two are a very fitting pair. The intense use of contrast can bee seen throughout the book 102 Dachshunds.

Another smooth black and tan dachshund named Lucy finds herself searching for her forever family. After a brief stint on Craig’s List, this pup has been successful placed in a temporary foster home. Don’t let this happen to your doxie. To learn more click here. The underweight doxie needs to gain a few pounds, and at the dog park seemed very sweet. We had Rufus for 7 years before I got Emily and that was a wonderful time, but I do think two is such a great number for our family. Despite their age difference, they really seem to get along nicely. I also feel better about leaving them alone – whether it is for a few minutes or a few hours – knowing that they have each other. Can you feel the love and sweetness they share?! This month we have had Emily a full year.

Emily is a squirmy dachshund. She is constantly cautious of people, places and things. I don’t really understand why, but whatever the reason, it just adds to her overall charm. However, when Emily takes a moment to be still, I think she is one of the most elegant dachshunds I know. In her stillness I see grace, beauty and a smile. What do you think?!
