It has been an easy Sunday with lots of relaxing and sunbathing for all.  Gotta love those lazy summertime Sunday afternoons.  I know Lily does.

My two reds like to snuggle together – everywhere and anywhere. They’re so freaking precious; I can’t stand it.  What do you think?!

Lily has befriended Rufus, a greater challenge than Emily, and I think it’s sweet.

Lovely Lily

I know the longer Lily is with us, the harder it will be to say goodbye but I know we can do it. Milo was part of our daily lives for a year and half. We loved him and the thought of him not being there anymore was difficult but… we went on and it was nice to return to two. Part of Lily’s massive appeal personally for me is her tiny size; she’s like a pocket-size dachshund. But puppies don’t stay puppies forever. Both Rufus and Emily were Lily’s size at one time and today they’re full-grown at a healthy and happy 11 pounds. Lily may or may not ever make it to 11 pounds, and that’s how it goes when you adopt a puppy; the mystery of what it will become overtime.

I do think having three dachshunds is a great number to aspire to, when one is ready. Here is my tried and true philosophy (based on all that I have experienced first hand and via close friends): One doxie is good for the active human that take his dachshund with him everywhere. Traveling with one is easy and they make great travel companions – whether it’s to the local mall or another state. Two (or more) is good for the human that works traditional hours or must be away from home a lot, because they keep each other company. One can still travel with two dachshunds (though it can be more challenging). Three is the ideal number because when you have a pair, the loss of one can be traumatic for the surviving dachshund. Three nearly guarantees that your pups won’t ever be alone – even in the event one dies. Additionally with three, you can travel with one (which is easier than two or three) and leave two at home guilt free because you know they have each other. With two dachshunds, either both go or both stay but I feel like it’s rude and unfair to leave one home alone without a four-legged friend or human. I know we have asked the question before, but what’s your doxie number?! Has it recently evolved from the last time we asked?! The number can easily go up or down.  Despite the temptress Lily, I believe my number today remains strong at 2.

Let sleeping dogs lie

Photographing sleeping dachshunds is not terribly exciting, and sometimes where our dachshunds choose to sleep and how, may not always make for great photographs. However, they remain a favorite of mine. I do believe fewer things are as precious and peaceful as a sleeping dachshund. Except for perhaps two or three sleeping dachshunds. What do you think?!

Lily, Emily & their stick

Dachshunds (and probably dogs in general) love sticks. Despite my continued protest they insist on chewing on sticks. I provide an array of other chew toys, but apparently nothing is as good as an old fashion stick. I’m constantly taking them away from them but… on occasion I’ll let them play with it while I snap a few photos.  How about yours, do they likes sticks?!

Sunday marked Lily’s 10-day anniversary with us. She continues to blossom with my pack. Emily provides lots of opportunity for play and rough housing, while Rufus has become her favorite snuggle buddy. Like many dachshunds we all know, Lily loves to lay out in the yard and soak up the sun’s rays. Lily has also shown signs of independence. All on her own she’ll make the decision to take a nap by herself in the master bedroom on the king-size bed among its pillows. We have dog stairs and she knows how to use them at will. I believe Dachshund Rescue and Placement has received many inquires and few applications. We really try to stay out of vetting process since the decision isn’t ours to make, but we’re eager to find out who will be getting this little darling doxie. We all have grown very fond of her and hope she finds the perfect forever family soon so they can partake in some of this priceless puppyhood. Paws crossed for some good news in the days ahead.

It’s beach season. These are from last Sunday’s beach excursion.  Sophie the longhair dachshund truly loves the beach – proof is in the pictures.

The apples of my eye: Rufus & Emily.  I’m enjoying Lily tremendously, but I do look forward to the day when I can return giving all my time and attention back to my doxie pair.  I love to spoil them senseless since they’re such a great source of happiness for me. Don’t you delight in doing the same with yours?!

Today’s post illustrates why a dachshund puppy needs another young at heart doxie to be her playmate OR a very active human. Doxie puppies love to eat, sleep and play. The eat and sleep part are easy, but can you handle the doxie play portion of raising little Lily?! Paws and tails cross hoping Lily’s perfect permanent placement comes soon – not for me because we’re enjoying her a lot and she’s welcome for as long as it takes, but… for them, because they’re missing some of the best moments. These precious puppy memories are simply priceless.
