The fame unlucky Friday the 13th often conjures images of black cats or a masked murder carrying a machete. Some people try to arm themselves with lucky rabbit foots, horseshoes or other charms in attempt to avoid the bad luck some believe come with the date. I think the best good luck charm is always a dachshund so I’m serving up a lucky seven black and tans. If a black cat crossing your path today is a sign of bad things to come, then perhaps seven black and tan dachshunds will bring you lots of good fortune and blessings. Wishing all of our fans and friends a big windfall today.

Limited edition ROTW blankets

I’m always looking for new and innovative ways to raise money for the charity (Dachshund Outreach Giving and Socialization) while showcasing some original dachshund photography. Well, I found these lightweight blankets (40″ x 60″ inches). They are a super soft poly-fiber jersey fleece material that is machine washable in cold, and can be put in the dryer (supposedly but I don’t necessarily recommend it). The edges are turned and sewn. I have never worked with this fulfillment house previously so I don’t have any experience with their products, but I really like how the blankets turned out. The charity’s cost to produce and ship the blankets is $50. Only three blankets were made, and at this time I have no immediate plans of making others. I like producing specialty items in limited quantities to make them distinct, hard to find, unique collectors’ items. AND… if some day I end up being a world-renowned dachshund photographer and artist, perhaps they’ll be worth something (to someone). One can dream, right?!

If you want a one-of-kind blanket, it can be yours for a tax-deductible donation of $85 (or more). I was very tempted to keep the blankets for myself but I feel like it’s more important to raise operational funds for the charity than satisfy my personal vanity to decorate my home in all things dachshund (though it was not an easy decision, I think it’s the right one). The blankets could be used as throw blankets when watching TV or reading a book, or they could be nice accent pieces for a bedroom set. They could even be framed and hung on the wall, if inclined.

The blankets will be given out on a first-serve, first-come basis. The first three people who make their donations will get them. Please specify which blanket you want in order from 1 to 3, I’ll do my best to honor your request. If you make a donation AFTER all three have been given away, a full refund will immediately be issued.

Thanks in advance for the consideration. Even if the blankets are not your personal style or in your price range, let me know what you think in case I decide to produce some in a greater quantity going forward.

UPDATE: Wow, as of 7:30 PST 9/12/13 all blankets have been allocated. Thank you!

Moxie doxie tribute

Today is 9/11 and as many of us remember the fallen, I would like to pay tribute to one special dachshund: Moxie. I got word this Sunday that this darling doxie had passed recently. As I mentioned yesterday, I feel very connected to each and every dachshund I photograph. Moxie was the senior red smooth doxie that personified her name; despite her white face and paws this dachshund had spunk. Moxie was a treat to photograph and she will be missed.

If any fan, friend or fellow-doxie human wants to make a tax-deductible donation in Moxie’s name a personalize condolence postagram will be mailed to her family. I especially like these postagrams because the photo pops out of the postcard, which makes for a great keepsake. When our doxies pass, all we have are our memories and pictures. With your help Moxie’s family can have a few more pictures. My only request, in order to make it cost efficient for the charity, please ensure your donation is $10 or more.

Moxie was a wonderful soul and I’m grateful I had the chance to meet and photograph the precious pup. I hope my Rufus is just as spirited when he reaches her age. She was a fine example of a dachshund. She and her family are in our thoughts.

Wishing Bandit well

Each and every dachshund I have photographed is special to me. I feel a personal connection which each of them and consider them all part of my extended pack. This morning our good friend Bandit is undergoing some dental surgery. Anytime our darling doxies go under anesthesia, it takes our breath away until we hear they’ve come out of it safely. I know Bandit’s humans are anxious today so we are sending him (and them) lots of positive healing thoughts. Looking forward to hearing some good new later today. We love you Bandit.

Beating the heat

Labor Day may mark the end of the “American Summer” as many human children return to school, but summer is actually here through September 21. With temperatures in the triple digits we’re feeling it Southern California. Luckily for my pups and me we’re able to beat the heat by visiting Summerland (again) and dipping our paws in the Pacific Ocean. Stay cool doxie friends.

Just Lily

Just Lily Blossom looking lovely with those big round eyes. Lily has been with us for 8 weeks today, and we couldn’t imagine a life without her now. How I look at… some human pregnancies are meticulously planned while others are happy accidents. Rufus was a year and half in the planning and Emily was four years in the making. We took our time with both doxies prior, and honestly we took our time with Lily. We didn’t even consider keeping her until around day 30, but we’re thrilled we did. Life with dachshunds is good.

My doxie trio

Lily is getting used to the family business of photography. When doing the lifestyle shoots she’s good to go, but when the lights turn on and we setup a studio style portrait she gets a little nervous. However, she is greatly comforted when placed in the middle of Rufus and Emily. I wanted to mix it up, but Lily always looked terrified when placed on either end. Yet when placed in the middle of her two older siblings she was so comfortable she would fall asleep. Too funny. We’ll keep working with Lily, but in the meantime enjoy the photos and stay tuned for more to come. In the bottom photo I especially love Rufus’ pursed lips, Emily’s smile and Lily’s oversized ears. They’re my precious pack.

Hunting Rabbit

Dachshund (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). The dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed of dog belonging to the hound family. The standard size dachshund was bred to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, while the miniature dachshund was developed to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits.

Neighborhood rabbits be warned; Rufus means business. He is no Elmer Fudd.
