Yesterday we got to visit with our friend Wilbur, the wirehair dachshund. Wilbur recently had neck surgery. Despite his odd haircut and new neck accessory, he is doing remarkably well. He was able to walk, pee and poop almost immediately out surgery – which are all good signs. He still has a road of recovery ahead him and jumping is off-limits but… all signs are looking good for the immediate future. We’re just grateful our friend is doing well. Thanks to all who offered their positive healing thoughts. It certainly helped!

Four-pawed pet bowls, take 2

The four-pawed pet bowls are back! The last campaign on Kickstarter was not successfully funded in time, but Efeet designer Dylan Kendall is a determined woman. Now using Indiegogo they are about a 4th of the way to their goal. We at ROTW remain fans and friends. Moreover for every dog bowl purchased a $1 is donated to Hope for Paws, a dog rescue in South LA. Contribute today and reserve your bowl(s) while helping the dog community. Sounds like a win win. My doxie pack loves them. Proof is in the pictures.

This weekend we got a chance to meet three new dachshunds, but unfortunately I only remember two of three names – sigh. They were really a lovely pack of doxies, and it was a blast to hang out with them at the park. We look forward to doing it again, and we hope you’re getting out regularly with yours and making new friends also. Socialization is very important for our doxies (and fun). Enjoy the photos friends.

Happy Adopt-a-versary Rusty

The red smooth dachshund Rusty was rescued three years ago, and just celebrated his adopt-a-versary this weekend. I photographed Rusty at my home in Hollywood in February 2011, and despite his checkered past and tattered appearance, he was an excellent model and houseguest. Rusty now has two pack mates: Bandit and Daisy, and is thriving in his new home. Happy Adopt-a-versary Rusty. Rusty and his pack mates were also featured in our book 102 Dachshunds. It warms the heart to know another rescue is living happily ever after.

Being a nonprofit in today’s financial climate is certainly a challenge. Asking folks to give for the shake of giving seems to be a harder pill to swallow for many these days. I think most want to give. At Dachshund Outreach Giving and Socialization (DOGS) we recognize that you have the choice to give to any one of the many different charities out there, and in exchange for your premium contributions we want to offer you a token of our appreciation. In return for your donation (and depending on the amount) we give you a photo postcard, an original DOGS T-shirt, a custom blanket or a one-of-a-kind book – while supplies last. We always have ambitions of collecting thousands of dollars in donations, but truthfully we often only end up amassing a few hundred at a time. We’re grateful for each dollar, value everyone who supports our vision and remain steadfast in our resolve.

The DOGS T-shirts we offered earlier this year were a huge success with our fans and friends. After cost the shirts are not a big money maker for the charity, but we were able to distribute literature on IVDD and the importance of crate rest to over 22 different states in the union. We strive to raise money, but more importantly we want to raise awareness in our dachshund loving public. So the shirts are back.

Learning from last time we offering pre-orders for one week (Sunday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 6) to ensure everyone has the opportunity to get their size of choice. Like last time I will only order a limited quantity, but this is your chance to guarantee you get yours. Last Summer we debuted our smooth DOGS T-shirt and this Falls it’s the longhair’s turn. We offering two shirts for the longhair for two reasons: 1) I believe finding quality longhair dachshund apparel is rare and 2) it was super hard to decide between the six finalists that I made it easier on myself and picked two. I’m also giving you a second chance to order the smooth DOGS T-shirt (in green).

Additionally, because the shirts will not physically be available for distribution until November (delayed gratification) we are offering a small discount. You can pre-order your T-shirt this week for $35. Moreover, if you want to order two shirts you may do so for $50. Final note: there was lots of requests for 3XL. We didn’t offer this size last time because it cost more; however, if you want a 3XL shirt it can be yours for $4 more ($39). I will only order 3XL for those who pre-order because of the extra expenses associated. When the shirts arrive in November they will be made available to the general public for $40 (or more). Order yours today by clicking here and please be certain to note what shirt(s) and size you want. If you fail to do so during the Paypal transaction, just send me an email afterwards.

Hope you like the new longhair DOGS T-shirts. We’ll be discussing the two featured dachshunds later this week. Thanks again for all the continued support.

Return to hiking

An article in the New York Times recently appeared discussing obesity in our dogs. Sadly many dachshunds are prone to putting on extra weight if we are not diligent with their diet and regular exercise. With a recent move, some health concerns and a new puppy my pack and I have been lax in our routine exercise these last three months. However, I’m thrilled to announce we’re back at it. On Thursday and Friday we hiked 3.68 miles (each day) and it felt so darn good. I continue to assert a tired dachshund is a good dachshund, and my trio has been exceptionally good these last two nights. You don’t have to emulate us, but be certain you get your doxies out and walking – 10, 15 or 20 minutes; 1, 2 or 3 miles. This is an excerpt from said article and really, for me, the point of it: “…most dogs were overweight because of lazy owners who confuse food with affection and attention. Letting the dogs out in the backyard is no substitute for a walk, he added. And giving the dog a cookie doesn’t make up for not playing with him.” There are no judgments here friends. Do your best, and please know loving your dachshund means walking him and not overfeeding her. Good luck doxie friends.

Emily is a total doll of a dachshund. She will always be my first girl doxie. Lily is my spirited Punky Brewster character, and Emily is simply pure sweetness. Rufus is king, Emily is an understated elegance and Lily is a total comedy riot. Today we pay tribute to my precious Emily Sue. Have a nice day doxie friends.

Emily and Lily have the right idea. Let’s just stay in bed and snuggle a little while longer. Have a great day friends.

It’s a bright new day. We got a few new Dachshund Delights’ hug-a-dog harnesses and took them (and the doxies) for a walk around the neighborhood yesterday to see how they’d do. They all – the new harnesses and dachshunds did just fine. We even had ourselves an impromptu photo shoot in the backyard afterwards. Have a wonderful doxie day friends.

Window shopping

Staring out the window for Rufus is probably the equivalent of his humans watching TV; I assume it is a form of entertainment for him. Rufus can seemingly sit there and stare out the window for hours with this intense yet content fixed gaze. He actually looks like he smiling in one photo. I know he is looking for those random cottontail sightings. It just tickles me pink to watch him do this. I feel like I can see the gears in his mind turning as he enters a trance of possibilities. Awe, wouldn’t it be grand to actually know a dachshund’s mind.
