One my favorite present day memories of Rufus is his blossoming bond with Emily. We waited 7 years before getting a second dachshund, and I do believe Emily was well worth the wait. What do you think?! Don’t they make a very balanced pair!?

9 days of Rufus

Rufus was born on August 21, 2004; but we didn’t meet until Saturday, October 30 that same year. In 9 days we’ll celebrate 9 years of Rufus. To commemorate the occasion we’ll spend the next 9 days showcasing Rufus and sharing some of our favorite memories – past and present.

My earliest memory of Rufus was bringing him home. I held him in my lap for the whole trip back (about an hour car ride) and when we finally got to the house and started to get out, he got stuck underneath the car seat. It was only for a few seconds; I think he was naturally nervous about arriving in a new place and I was frantic about getting him out without breaking him. Once we were inside he seem to be more self-assured and curious as he explored his new kingdom. I do believe that car ride home allowed us to bond, and that day changed the course of my life forever.

It has been a great week of showcasing the Jacobson pack: Sandy, Oscar Mayer and PJ. They are lovely dachshunds and together with my trio, it proved to be a real fun afternoon. We enjoyed their company a lot, and got some sweet pictures to share with all of our friends and fans. Hope you like them as much as we have sharing them. Make it a great day doxie friends.

PJ is simply put one very handsome dachshund. He is tremendously easy on the eyes with a very fun and relaxed disposition. He was a real treat to photograph, and I only have lots of positive things to say about the darling doxie. He is welcome back anytime. Enjoy friends.

RIP Bocce

It is with great sadness that we must inform our friends and fans that we lost another member of our community last night. Bocce, the petite red piebald, was humanely euthanized last night to end her suffering from canine Lymphangiectasia. I first met Bocce at the dog beach, and that’s where we saw her most often over the years. She truly seemed happy at the beach with her ball. Bocce was relatively young and taken too soon. The only comfort is her pain has come to an end. She leaves behind a pack mate, Bella, and her humans. Our hearts aches for them all today.

If any fan, friend or fellow-doxie human wants to make a tax-deductible donation in Bocce’s name a personalize condolence postagram will be mailed to her family.

We continue to offer this service because of the overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received. It has been very touching to the grieving families to know they’re not alone. I have also heard that many families are moved by the show of support from strangers across the country. To which I remind them, when you love a dachshund we’re not strangers to one another but simply friends yet to meet. Other dachshund humans truly understand the loss of a loyal protector and short-legged constant companion. I think we know the hurt better than most because our dachshunds are not just dogs or pets, but family.

These postagrams are great keepsake and better than flowers or a casserole (I assert). When our doxies pass, all we have are our memories and pictures. With your help Bocce’s family can have a few more pictures of Bocce playing on the beach during happier times. My only request, in order to make it cost efficient for the charity, please ensure your donation is $10 or more. Thank you. May Bocce rest in peace. Also peace be with Bocce’s humans and Bella.

Sweet Sandy

I love a white face dachshund, and the sweet senior Sandy is no exception. She is simply precious. She may move a little slower than the rest of her pack (Oscar Mayer and PJ), but she still moves. I love dachshunds at all ages and I’ve been immersed in puppyhood for the last three years now, but I do look forward to watching all my doxie babies grow old. Sandy was calm, cool and collected during our play date and pictures. Love me some Sandy. How about you!?

Lily update

We first met Lily on July 19; that was 12 weeks and 5 days ago today. I must admit keeping Lily was absolutely one of the best decisions we made as a family. I affectionately referred to her as our happy accident since she was not planned. We aspired to having a third dachshund some day, but didn’t know it would come so soon. After two months of crating training, I started to leave Lily out of her crate while I run short errands about town and gradually expanded the intervals of time, and she is doing awesome. I have not come home to any accidents or destruction. She has even learned to go to the door and bark when she needs to go outside to potty. I would say she was successfully housebroken by late August / early September. She is proving to be a very smart dachshund. When I had her weighed at our last vet visit (last week) she is holding steady at about 6 pounds. Next week she goes into for post-spay blood work and spay. We’re also going to have two baby teeth pulled (which is another reason why I recommend spaying and neutering around the 6 month mark); we want her smile to be perfect like her. The best news of all is that the pack is thriving. Everyone seems to be very content with one another, and all of them get along smashingly well. Rufus has a very special and sweet relationship with his girls on an individual basis, and my two girls are gaga for each other and Rufus. I’m truly bursting with pride. I’m one very proud dachshund papa.

Reds vs. Black and Tans

We  have the black and tans: Oscar, PJ and Emily. We also have the reds: Lily, Rufus and Sandy. Each grouping represents it’s color and offers a nice cross-section of how a dachshund changes in appearance as he or she ages. Our seniors (relatively speaking) are Sandy and Oscar; followed by the middle-aged doxies with Rufus and PJ, and representing the puppy era are Emily and Lily. You can actually look at each set and see how a dachshund ages. Sandy and Oscar are the oldest with their white faces, Rufus and PJ are showing their distinguishing greying muzzles and the puppies have that youth sparkle in their eyes. I love them at every age and each age groups comes with its own pros and cons. Do you love one a particular age or phase of a dachshund’s life?! I think I’d be hard-pressed to choose.

The Jacobson pack

This week’s featured dachshunds – outside of our regular Rufus, Emily and Lily posts, is the Jacobson doxie pack. It includes Sandy – the red, white-faced smooth doxie; Oscar Mayer – the black and tan smooth with distinguishing grey accents; and PJ – the young black and tan smooth piebald dapple (though some say a dachshund can’t be both a piebald AND dapple but I gave up long ago trying to “properly” call out the seemingly limitless varied pattern combinations of a dachshund). They were a treat to host for a play date and pictures. Sandy and Oscar are in their teens and PJ is still in single digits, but all three got along great together and meshed well with my pack. It was truly a joyful day that yielded some fun pictures. Enjoy friends.
