I absolutely love showing my dachshunds the world outside of their own backyard. They always seem so happy exploring, smelling new scents and being my companion wherever we go. I especially love to visit our favorite hiking trail after a recent downpour and during the early afternoon when it’s empty. My dachshunds and I have done this hike 33 times in the last 57 days; it’s truly a favorite of ours and only because I know the trail and my dachshunds well do I feel comfortable taking them off leash. Remember safety first. Have a wonderful day doxie friends.

RIP Sandy

Sandy | October 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

It is with great sadness that we must inform our friends and fans that Sandy Valentina Jacobson was humanely euthanized Tuesday. About two weeks ago Sandy was diagnosed with adrenal cancer. She stopped eating and was getting tremendously frail according to her family.

My heart is heavy today, and each time I hear of another doxie friend passing (and it seems like there has been several this year) my heart aches for the family. I spent the night looking through old pictures of Sandy and remembering our time together. Sandy was a sweet dachshund when in my care and she’ll be missed.

Sandy was 14; she is survived by her pack mates: Oscar and PJ.

If any fan, friend or fellow-doxie human wants to make a tax-deductible donation in Sandy’s name a personalize condolence postagram will be mailed to her family. These postagrams are great keepsake and better than flowers or a casserole (I assert). When our doxies pass, all we have are our memories and pictures. With your help Sandy’s family can have a few more pictures of their darling doxie. My only request, in order to make it cost efficient for the charity, please ensure your donation is $10 or more. Thank you. May Sandy rest in peace, and peace be with her surviving family.

Feels like fall

It’s cold in Southern California (by our standards) which means it’s the perfect occasion to sleep in and snuggle in our beds as Rufus demonstrates in today’s post. Hope everyone is doing great on this Wiener Dog Wednesday. Don’t forget to get your DOGS Fall 2013 T-shirt if you haven’t already. We have limited sizes and quantities still available.

Dachshund domination on the trail

Theo, Lily & Rufus | November 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Twice now I’ve had the privilege to hike with five dachshunds on one of my favorite trails, and I’m not certain who enjoys it more 1) me, 2) the doxies or 3) the fellow hikers who smile big as we run pass them. Apparently it’s a real sight to see. I took my camera with me this last time, but as you can imagine it’s truly a challenge to responsibly hike with five dachshunds and attempt to snap some photographs. Nonetheless, I was able to snag a few decent shots.

A lot of folks were giving us pats on back for conquering the trail together, but in full disclosure I want to everyone to know I only recommend hiking with multiple dachshunds by those experienced doxie-handlers. I’ve been hiking with my dachshunds for the last 5 years. My doxie pack and I have hiked this specific trail 32 times in the last 54 days. I have an established relationship with Lucy and Theo (the two guest doxies on our hike), and I only visit the trail during non-peak times to avoid crowds of humans or other dogs. It’s an awesome experience to hike with five dachshunds, but I only do it responsibility and recommend you do the same. Your safety and the safety of your dachshunds should always be your first priority, but with some practice and a little patience, there’s not much you can’t do together.

*** Special Note: Our DOGS Fall 2013 T-shirts have arrived. Those who made advance donations will be receiving their shirts this week, and those who still want one should probably act fast before they’re all gone. ***

Every 3rd Sunday of the month is what I call “Sunday Doxie Fun Day.” For the last 9 years we have been meeting monthly with our social group LA Doxies. This weekend was our annual pack walk, and I got to meet these two wirehair beauties. It’s a male and female pair and the color is wild boar. There were really stunning examples of the breed; I could have photographed them all afternoon. It was a pleasure to meet them Sunday, and I’m thrilled to share them with you today. Make it a great doxie day friends.

Bella Blu revisited

Today is my 692nd daily post, and I’m telling you that random fact because sometimes I struggle with what I want to showcase each day. Every now and then when I’m at a lost with what to share I’ll go back one year. For example, I was reviewing my catalog of photos and revisited our November 2012 entry featuring Bella Blu. Do you remember her?! She was this adorable black and tan dapple doxie that needed to be re-homed, and her human reached out to me for help. With some assistance SCDR, Bella Blu was successfully placed. Although her new family never got in touch with us, we’d like to believe nearly a year later she is living happily ever after. We choose to believe no news is good news. Bella Blu was in our lives only for a very short window of time, but we luckily have our priceless pictures so she’ll never be forgotten. Looking back through the years at my personal library of dachshund photos it is humbling to imagine how many different dachshunds I have had the privilege to know and enjoy. Bella Blu we love you wherever you are, and hope your life is better than ever. Have a wonderful doxie day friends.

*** Bella Blu is barking at me to throw the ball. She loved to play fetch! ***

Kasie, the wirehair

Sometimes I have dachshund cravings, and as I was considering today’s post, I was longing to feature a wirehair dachshund. After a quick review of my archives I decided to share Kasie.  Our longhair dachshunds T-shirts arrive on Monday for disbursement, and as I consider wirehair candidates for Spring 2014, I wonder if it’ll be Kasie or another wirehair. Only time will tell, but it’s fun to speculate. Have a wonderful day doxie friends. Kasie can also be found in our book 102 Dachshunds, a great gift to give or get this holiday season (while supplies last).

Throwback Thursday with Rufus

These are from September 2008. I took them with my 35mm film camera. Before I went hardcore digital, I did experiment with film. I love the look of them and Rufus, but the process was too costly for me personally. Nonetheless, I still have these sweet keepsakes for Throwback Thursday. Enjoy doxie friends.
