Rufus snagged a squirrel

Rufus | October 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

The squirrels have been taunting Rufus all summer and his obsession has worried me. Then this morning he snagged himself a squirrel. Yep. One dead squirrel. I never would wish harm to another living being, but in that moment as I saw him prancing with his prize in his mouth and Milo following by his side, I was filled with disgust and pride. I was grossed out by the dead rodent in his mouth, but I could see him beaming with self-gratification that all of his months of chase finally paid off. It was truly an odd feeling for me. For the rest of the afternoon the yard was quiet, but I doubt the squirrels will stay away long-term, but perhaps they’ll be a little more careful about how close to the ground they come.

Piebald puppy

Madison | January 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

In January when we went to get Emily we also got to meet two of her three sisters: Myfanwy and Madison. Myfanwy is only in West Hollywood and relatively close to us, but Madison went to Northern California. So we haven’t seen her since that one day in January, but that’s why we have pictures. It’s fun to reminisce. I do hear from the Madison’s family from time to time and by all accounts the little rescue pup is doing very well.  It’s wonderful to know the litter of 4 puppies surrendered at one day old is now thriving in their forever homes.  Rescue puppies can live happily every after.

Dudley

Dudley | April 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

Dudley is a foster pup I photographed in April 2011, and I’m happy to report he is thriving in his forever home today. I’m thrilled that I was able to help in his placement via my photographs. If you can’t rescue, foster. If you can’t foster, volunteer – time and labor. If you can’t volunteer, donate money. We’re all in a position to help in some small way. I donate my time and labor to photograph doxies looking for their forever home and it helps. We are all in a position to help, if we choose. I’m also happy to report that this foster will be among the 102 dachshunds featured in my forthcoming book: 102 Dachshunds, a book of original photographs. Reserve your copy today if you haven’t already. To go from someone’s discarded trash to a loved family member featured in a book, what a wonderful turn of events. Life can be like a fairy tale sometimes.

Pensive Emily

Emily | August 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

Emily sometimes has this very pensive way about her. She commonly looks as though she’s deep in thought which of course causes my own mind to consider what she must be thinking. To know the mind of a dachshund.

Chunky sweater weather

When we’re home cuddling on the couch on these cool desert nights, I like to put my dachshunds in a chunky warm sweater. The sweaters are not great for mobility, but perfect for sitting on the sofa watching TV or visiting with friends.

Snuggle buddies

Rufus and Emily enjoy their Jackrocketwear buggle snuggle bed and keep warm during these cool and wet fall like days in Southern California. They make an adorable pair, don’t you agree?!

Fall spirit

Rufus | December 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

With the arrival of cooler temperatures to Southern California and the sun setting earlier each day, it feels like fall is truly here. This is a good occasion to pull out the fall wardrobe for both human and dachshund. What are your doxies wearing this season? Please share your doxie’s fall pictures on our Facebook page.

Random archives

Polie | June 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

I have been photographing dachshunds for nearly 8 years now, and I have amassed a pretty extensive collection. Some weeks my posts are methodically thought out and planned, much like I imagine a teacher prepares her lessons. However, other times I browse my archives and randomly pick something that catches my eye. Today’s post is the latter.

Dapple black and tan

Happi | July 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

Sunday night we had some friends visiting from New York. They have a black and tan dapple doxie, Opus, which looks very similar to the one featured today. Today is for them. Happy black and tan dapple doxie day.  I love how we can see our doxie’s likeness in others.
