If you’re in the greater Southern California area, please mark the calendar and join us for LA Doxies‘ August Meetup at Huntington Dog Beach. Click here for the details.
I know some dachshunds like the water and others really don’t. But remember the beach is more than just the water. To be perfectly honest, my doxie trio is indifferent to the ocean. They don’t love it, but they also don’t hate it. They just accept that it’s there and part of the terrain we visit regularly. What my dachshunds DO LOVE about the beach is 1) the varied amount of smells, 2) running off leash, 3) the cooler temperatures when the inland is in the triple digit heat, 4) chasing seabirds from the shoreline, and 5) hunting lizards and baby crabs, and 6) digging in the sand.
I personally enjoy them getting some mental stimulation and physical exercise. Running on the beach has replace hiking for us, and I think it’s better for their backs. Instead of climbing steep hills and navigating uneven earth, they able to run in the mostly level sand – which provides a healthy amount of resistance and strength training for their little legs and back.
Whether you are here or somewhere else, take them hounds to the beach whenever you can. They may not like getting in the water, but the beach is so much more than its body of water. Food for thought friends. We typically walk from one end to the other and that’s our main source of exercise these days. My pack loves it.
Also, if you are in the area and plan to come out this Sunday for LA Doxies’ August Meetup, that day also happens to be Rufus’ 12th Birthday!!! So come celebrate with us. AND, if you can’t (for whatever reason – geography or another commitment); please enjoy 15% off everything in our DOGS’ Shop. Simply use the promo code RUFUS at checkout. In lieu of gifts or cards, we prefer you treat yourself to something nice in Rufus’ honor and our DOGS’ Shop is a great place to start. Enjoy friends and thanks for the continued support.
