Part of keeping a dachshund healthy and happy is exercising them consistently and properly. It’s a brand new year and time to renew our commitments to physical fitness, and I know of no better motivators than my dachshund pack. Additionally, our dachshund approved hiking trails are gradual inclines with no steep stairs. We believe some stairs are okay, but ramps are better and ideal for our low-riding hounds. Earlier this week our friends at Dodger’s List released a one sheet how-to and video on ramp training. If you missed it please check it out here; it a great resource. Have a wonderful day doxie friends.

I have been talking about exercising with Dachshunds over on my blog for years. Keeping them fit is really important and, as you pointed out, they make great exercise partners. In our case, we don’t hike a lot of stairs but the do climb up and over roots/rocks and have climbed some really steep trails. They are strong as a whip and I know that having really strong back muscles saved Chester from a major injury once.
Awesome. Rufus and I have been avid hikers for the last 5+ years and as Emily and Lily joined our pack they quickly took the tradition. We love it. They’re clearly happier when we hike 3.5 miles vs. the days we don’t. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing.
well exercised wieners are happy & healthy wieners!!
