It has been a busy week for Rufus and his pack. Monday we had our second quarter blood work for Rufus; and we can confirm Rufus has progressed to Kidney Disease Stage III. 😦 We did some sub q fluids (Subcutaneous) on Monday and Wednesday, and we return on Friday (today) for another dose of fluids. #WishUsWell ❤
Right after our vet visit on Monday, we went on our weekly excursion to Rose Valley Falls (Ojai / Los Padres) with the whole pack. No amount of bad news was going to stop us from getting out together. ❤ It was certainly more work with three dachshunds in tow, and the photos were a little tougher to get with so much happening. Nonetheless, we managed to snag a few acceptable ones. Yay! #ThankGoodnessforDigitalPhotography 🙂 #Canon
Tuesday, Rufus enjoyed a casual jaunt to Studio City and Burbank. He loves a good car ride, and we love Katsu-ya’s crab rolls. ❤ . Wednesday we were back in Ojai (as we previously mentioned for some sub q fluids) and Thursday we took Rufus on another excursion – just him! 🙂 #SpoilHim #AllAboutRufus This time we visited Seven Falls / Inspiration Point Trail in Santa Barbara. And although the waterfall(s) were mostly dry (boo) we did find a few fun vista points.
Rufus is dying. That’s the truth of it. His appetite comes and goes. He breath smells (like death and decay – even after his teeth cleaning, so it’s something deeper / something internal), he sleeps a lot and his back legs seem to get a little more wobbly each day. #AgingIsntForWimps
We can choose to be sad about Rufus’ continued decline, or instead, we can celebrate his life each day and week. We have affectionately named Rufus’ recent expeditions of Southern California trail heads as Rufus’ Farewell Tour (and like Cher’s constant touring, we’re not really certain when it’ll actually end but plan to enjoy it for as long as we can). Ha! 🙂
Rufus, at his prime, was hiking popular trails in Los Angeles (Runyon, Fryman and Griffith) regularly. Rufus (along with friends and pack mates) used to hike 3.5+ miles easily in less than 60 minutes, and often with energy to spare. Rufus once hiked 30 consecutive days with his humans. ❤ #GoodOldDays
Rufus physically hikes less today, as I carry him most of the roundtrip up and down these mountains, but he still gets so excited to be out and about. And when I do decide set him down, he loves to explore and follow his nose. And of course, leave his mark (pee) everywhere we go. 🙂
Friday we return to the vet. Rufus gave a urine sample on Wednesday and we’re hoping to get a more complete look at his levels / proteins. We’ll keep y’all updated as we can, but we believe the best way to celebrate Rufus and his gift to our canine community is to keep living. That’s our plan. ❤
Be certain to do something fun with your posh pups this weekend, and share your photos below in the comments or on our Facebook DOGS Page.
Let’s continue to inspire each other to be the best dachshund humans we can be to our ever loyal hounds.
