Meet Mickey. This rescue was pulled the same time Abby was, and during our short time together he was super sweet with some distinct markings. His adoption is being overseen by Dachshund Rescue and Placement. Interested people should complete an online application. For a special Flickr slideshow, click here. Meet Abby. Abby is a lover. As a rescue she is naturally a little cautious at first, but after a quick introduction she is super sweet and loveable. She gets along with other dogs and is searching for her forever home. Her adoption is being overseen by Dachshund Rescue and Placement. Interested people should complete an online application. Ziggy is a beautiful black and tan tweenie. Absolutely gorgeous, I say. What do you think?

Beach day

Rufus | July 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

We celebrated the 4th of July with hike in the mountains, and today we continued the post-holiday activities with a weekday visit to a nearly empty beach. Rufus and Emily are living the good life. Proof is in the pictures. Hope you’re doing something fun with yours. Get them doxies out and about.

Rufus

I love featuring Rufus’ many friends, but some days I just want to enjoy a little Rufus. He is the genesis of my dachshund obsession, and I never grow tired of seeing him or sharing his image with my fellow doxieholics.

Being patriotic and prepared

Rufus | July 4, 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

Today Rufus & Emily wish everyone a very happy and safe 4th of July holiday. Remember some doxies may suffer from firework anxiety so prepare and plan in advance. The number one thing I can suggest is to please ensure your dog is safely confined to his crate or a quiet area during all the noise and commotion of the fireworks. Some statics suggest that the number of stray dogs received by shelters significantly increases the day after.  Please don’t be a 5th of July statistic.

Leo’s evolution

Leo | June 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

I’ve known Leo, the adorable longhair dapple chocolate, for several years now; I remember when his parents first rescued him how shy and apprehensive he was. Recently I got to doxie-sit Leo and his brother Polie for a day, and Leo is significantly a more confident doxie today. He may never be the bold dachshund his brother is, but it was certainly a joy to watch him with his tail erect and head held high as the self-assured Leo explored and guarded the backyard. For me, it’s amazing to witness the evolution, and I attribute his measureable progress to his devoted parents. Great job!!!

Three amigos

Rufus, Trouble & Colin | June 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

I’m a fan of the number 3. I’m not a numerologist, but much like someone might prefer the color green or the taste of key lime pie, I like the number 3. So naturally I enjoy photographing dachshunds as trios – especially when they’re friends. All of the doxies featured today were lone doxies at the time of the photos and were merely good friends sharing a photo shoot. Above we have Colin the longhair with his buddy Trouble the wirehair, and below it is Preston the longhair with best pal Stewie the smooth. Rufus, of course, makes a guest appearance in both pictures to make our trinity. What do you think about the look of three doxies – too much, just enough or is there room for more?

Doxies in cars

Emily Sue | June 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

I think dogs in general like going for rides in cars, and I also think some doxies (especially those that don’t suffer from car sickness) really enjoy seeing the world for an elevated perspective. Dachshunds are smart dogs with strong noses and a drive about town with the window opened or cracked seems to really stimulate their senses. I know Rufus and Emily jump at the opportunity to go for a ride with dad, and I’m always happy to have them along.

Random pic Saturday

Rufus | August 2008. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

I usually try to tell a story or highlight an event with my daily posts. Today there is no specific tale I’m telling; I’m simply sharing two of my favorite vintage photos of Rufus. I have four hard drives and thousands of pictures from the last 7 years, and nearly each day I’m adding to the collection. The challenge for me each night is choosing which ones to showcase. Happy Saturday!
