Still looking for that perfect forever home for our 8-week wirehair puppy Lucy. Interested prospective homes should complete an application online at Dachshund Rescue and Placement. This pup is a real doll, and she melts my heart each time we hang out. She’s absolutely precious.  Will you be her human?

Wall-e

What I like in general about photographing the dachshund is its distinctive form, and Wall-e gave me good form. I like the outline of the dachshund head, the silhouette of the long body, the big brown eyes, the floppy ears, the oversized paws, the barrel chest, the pronounced snout and the vibrant pink tongue – which makes an appearance occasionally when photographing doxies. Wall-e is a great example of a red smooth dachshund.

Show and tell

Milo & Rufus | September 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

A few weeks ago in my Facebook feed, I noticed these posts with pictures of dogs declaring various habits or behaviors and other messages. It reminded me of cross between an elementary school show and tell and Catholic confession, because most of the habits or behaviors being publicly shared are not particularly favorable but still endearing. For example, one that appeared on the LA Doxies Facebook page read, “I bark at old ladies.” Well, I don’t necessarily know why or how the trend started, but I’m certainly happy to join in the fun. Here are my few shots I snapped of mine showing and telling theirs. If you want to share a pic of yours, post it on the DOGS’ Facebook page, if you dare.

Stewie

Introducing the very sweet Stewie, a light red (blonde) dapple smooth dachshund now living in Arizona. I’ve known Stewie for years, but when we got together for our photo shoot last June he was suddenly shy. Despite his reservation, I think Stewie delivered some stellar photos. He is a beautiful doxie. Happy Tuesday!

Emily

After yesterday’s tragic news, I wanted to highlight a success story: Emily. My darling black and tan pup is a rescue that is thriving today in her forever home. Someone’s discarded trash is our treasure.  There are happy endings.

RIP Coco

Coco | July 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

It is with great sadness that I am reporting our friend Coco was hit by a car this week and killed instantly. Coco was a lively longhair chocolate full of curiosity and confidence. The bold doxie was right at home in front of the camera and lights, when I photographed him last July. He was only two then. Taken from his human too soon, today we celebrate his life and the indelible impression he made on us. He was a beautiful dachshund, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.

Lucy spotlight

We met Lucy yesterday, and I think for many of us it was love at first sight. We all can’t adopt her so the next best thing is to enjoy her in pictures. I really like the idea that one little rescue pup can bring so much joy and happiness to countless people who see her pictures.

Introducing Lucy

Lucy | August 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

Lucy was turned into a shelter as a stray and is about 7 weeks old. I got to spend a full day with the darling wirehair puppy and she is simply precious. I had to show some serious restraint because I was very tempted to submit an application for adoption, but two is my magic number. Nonetheless, Emily and Lucy were best friends. The two got along very well and I was bursting with joy all day watching them play. Lucy’s adoption is being overseen by Dachshund Rescue & Placement and is being fostered in Valley Village, CA. Interested folks should complete an online application. Whoever is approved for this darling doxie will be a very lucky human. I selfishly hope it’s someone close so we can schedule future play dates. You haven’t seen the last of Lucy, stay tuned.

Thor

It’s my pleasure to introduce the mighty Thor, a blue-eyed black and tan smooth dapple doxie with a big name and small stature. Thor was a sweet dachshund initially very shy and reserved, but by the day’s end we were trusting friends. Happy Wiener Dog Wednesday!
