Introducing Candie, the red smooth miniature dachshund. The precious pup is a rescue in foster care under the supervision of Dachshund Rescue & Placement. Luckily she may already have a permanent placement in review. She’s sweet and playful. She reminds friends and me of Milo – when he was puppy. Wishing Candie all the best on her journey toward finding her forever family. Paws crossed for a happy ending for this darling doxie.

Rufus and his toys

Rufus does enjoy his toys, and I certainly adore watching him play with them. For me, it’s like watching doxie TV. I’m a big advocate that our dachshunds only play with their toys while we – their humans – supervise them, which is why I call it doxie TV. Do you find yourselves watching doxie TV regularly!?  I could watch Rufus play for hours and often do.

It’s a bright new day.  I dare say nearly every day with a dachshund is a happy day.  Make it a great one friends.

Dog Inspired Rag Quilts

Many dachshund fans know our doxies love to burrow. Whether it is under blankets, freshly dried laundry or a pile of pillows our pups love to dig and bury themselves. I’m a huge admirer of the snuggle beds, and I have assembled a collection over the years. If you have ever shopped for dog beds, you know they are as varied as snowflakes and come in an assortment of colors, fabrics and prices. Our friends at Dog Inspired Rag Quilts on Facebook are offering custom homemade dog beds. These affordable lightweight snuggle dog beds are perfect all year round and are great for the crate, the car and home. I especially like them for traveling. They’re also the perfect size for doxie pairs to share.

The Tennessee woman responsible generally works with dachshund inspired fabrics, but happily accepts requests on the size and fabric. She designs to please. She also makes quilts. Rufus and Emily approve. Check them out for yourself, and tell them we said hi.

Cuddle buddies

Today’s featured photos are not necessarily artistic or stylized. The composition is a little messy to be honest, but I love the feeling they bring me when I see them. Deciding to expand the pack was a decision that took me nearly four years to make. Accepting responsibility for a dachshund is something I believe is a lifetime commitment – with emphasis on lifetime since these loveable low-riders can live to be 20 years old. I personally struggled with the decision because I really wanted to find a perfect friend for Rufus. I’m a big advocate that the first dog is all about you, but the second dog must be about the first. I originally wanted a red smooth male doxie to be Rufus’ buddy, but I ended up with a smooth black and tan female and… a year later, I’m very satisfied with the choice. These photos of my two doxies cuddling affirm for me that we found the right friend for Rufus.

Doxie rescues and another adoption event

Rescue Doxies | April 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Yesterday I got to meet four wonderful dachshunds searching for their forever families. A red longhair and a red wirehair – both are possible doxie-mixes, and two purebred black and tan smooths that are a bonded pair (litter mates I believe). Moreover, these four precious pups and several more like them will be available for adoption this Sunday, April 14 at Healthy Spot West Hollywood from 11 am to 3 pm. Sunday is a great opportunity to get an up-and-close look at a variety of doxies searching for their permanent homes. If you’re in the area come on out! For more info or to schedule a meet and greet, please call (310) 857-0086, email dachshundrescueoflosangeles@gmail.com or message Dachshund Rescue of Los Angeles on Facebook. Please share. Thank you!

Reviewing my catalog of dachshund portraitures I found these adorable photos of Leo, the red smooth dapple doxie. I thought for certain I had previously shared them, but much to my surprise I hadn’t. So it’s my pleasure to share with the world the handsome Leo. Those big eyes are captivating, and in the top picture he looks like he is smiling.  Leo and his sister Georgie are among those featured in the book 102 Dachshunds.

I believe the dachshund has a very distinct and attractive head. The long and pronounced snout, the cute floppy ears, and that adorable black button nose makes it recognizable from distance. I especially love Rufus‘ profile and head shoot. Rufus and family wish everyone a very merry Monday.

Emily. Emily. Emily.  We love you Emily.  You’re a silly, squirmy and quirky little doxie.  You’re almost the complete opposite of the bold and brave Rufus, but we love you and all the sweetness you bring to our lives daily.  Today, for no special reason, we celebrate you Emily.  It’s an Emily day.
