When Rufus looks up at me with those bright brown eyes, my heart melts and the woes of the world disappear – even if for just a moment. The dachshund is not necessarily right for everyone, but if it’s your chosen breed, the bond is truly something special.

The February birthdays continue. Today we celebrate Leonidas the Mini Lion King of Sparta Chu or Leo to his friends. Leo was rescued and joined his family in April 2009. As a rescue, his humans decided to make today his official birthday.

What has 6 eyes, 12 legs and a natural curiosity for the camera? Three darling doxies of course. Georgie, a red smooth, and Leo, a red smooth dapple, came to visit our home last June and it was total red domination for the day. The classic red smooth dachshund continues to be among my favorite in this very diverse breed, and my photos proudly reflect it.

Action shots are not generally my forte. I’m more often a “wait for the moment” type of doxie-arazzi photographer. Nonetheless, every now and then I manage to get a shot that I enjoy and want to share, even if Rufus is slightly out of frame.

Sometimes when I’m photographing I give a lot of thought and measure to a picture’s composition, lighting and overall aesthetic. Other times, I’ll stumble upon a very organic setup, grab my camera and just shoot – hoping for the best. The results may not always be picture perfect but it’s an honest rendering. Emily is celebrating 12 weeks today, and it makes me smile to see her and Rufus sharing such a sweet moment.

Look at those tongues! Ralphie, the black and tan, and Rufus seem to be in sync. Fast friends Ralphie and Rufus play and photograph like long lost brothers. Ralphie was three at the time of the picture.

A lot of love has recently been expressed about our new girl Emily, but today we’re bringing it back to our first – our handsome boy Rufus. He is my first dachshund and remains one of my favorite beings on this earth. There will be other doxies in my life, but there is only one Rufus.

This Friday Emmy crossed a milestone; she got her first dog bag. Rufus was trained to travel in his bag starting at about 11 weeks and the tradition continues with Emily. With our extensive travels it’s imperative that our doxies be comfortable and capable of traveling in their bags.
