Get Well Rufus

Rufus had a rough 24 hours and we’re hoping Wiener Dog Wednesday brings a better day for us both. After a night of vomiting and a morning of additional vomiting and diarrhea our vet and I speculate Rufus ate something (probably outside) that didn’t agree with him. We gave him a fluid pack and two injections (Cerenia & Centrine) for the vomiting and diarrhea. Since Tuesday afternoon he has been resting steadily. Seeing a doxie so still is always disheartening because we all know that’s not their normal nature. Today’s post pays tributes to Rufus from better days, and we hope for their return very soon.

Sunbathing

Milo, Emily & Rufus | August 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

We’re experiencing some triple digit heat in Southern California so my dachshunds are electing to sunbath from the comfort of our air-conditioned living room. Stay cool this August.

Laci and Max demonstrate one of the dachshund’s favorite things: belly rubs. Beautiful models. Have a great day!

Back to the beach

The countdown to Labor Day has begun so we’re spending the weeks leading up to it highlighting some of our favorite summer activities and memories. Kiddie pools are great alternatives, but there’s something fabulous about our doxies running free on the beach enjoying the surf and sand.

A kiddies pool

Not everyone can make it to the beach, and a good alternative is a simple old fashion kid’s plastic pool. August is typically one of the hottest months of the summer season, and if you dare to go outside consider making a pool available for your doxies. The pool generally retails for about $10 and is a good investment for those hot summer days.

Myfanwy, Emily Sue’s sister, recently got spayed and had a lingering baby tooth extracted. We’re certain she’ll be like new after a few more days, but we want to be sure to wish her well. We love you Myfanwy and hope you have a fast recovery.

Oliver at the beach

Continuing our summer-tastic theme as we enter the last month of the summer season, we’re showcasing Oliver the longhair red dachshund. It was fun watching him and his sister Princess, another longhair doxie, enjoy the beach this past weekend. I think the cool Pacific Ocean was just what this doxie needed. Any big summer plans with your dachshund(s) as the summer comes to an end? Curious doxie humans want to know.

Milo, the superstar

Milo | July 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

After being gone for 35 consecutive days Milo is home. Wiener Dog Nationals producers and trainers sang Milo’s praises when I retrieved him earlier this week. Milo was one of multiple doxies casted as the lead – Shelby, I believe. Yes the lead dachshund character is a female, but Milo was indifferent to it and delivered a stellar performance by all accounts. We can’t wait to see the film when it’s released later this year. To keep current with the details be certain to follow along on Facebook. This is the first scripted film (not a documentary) that celebrates the breed we champion – the dachshund – so all doxie-holics should be certain to support it.  By the way, that’s a henna tattoo on Milo’s leg of a lightning bolt.

A piebald on the beach

A Piebald Doxie | July 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

A lot of the time the photographs I feature on this site are of doxies I know pretty well and with whom I have relationship. However, there is the rare occasion where I meet and photograph a doxie in passing and love it. This Sunday I met this adorable piebald named Daisy, I think, and I just fell in love during our brief encounter. What do you think? Is she precious?

Lenny | July 2012. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels

Doing something summer-tastic yesterday we hung at the beach with our friends. We also got a chance to meet three dachshunds looking for their forever homes: Lenny, Lola and Meeko. Lola, the female black and tan with a patch of white, and Meeko, the red female with a white face, adoptions are being overseen by Dachshund Rescue & Placement. The adorable black and tan newly neutered male, Lenny, adoption is being overseen by Dachshund Paws and Pals Rescue. Interested people should complete an online application. Please feel free to share with friends. Let’s get these doxie adopted.
