Rufus and Emily are reminding everyone to get out and vote. Regardless of party affiliation or politics, it’s our duty as American citizens to participate in our government. If you haven’t already voted early, don’t delay, get out today and vote. Rufus accompanied us to polls in 2004 and 2008, and he’ll be with us again today – along with Emily. For us, voting is a family affair.

A friend and fan recently painted Rufus’ portrait as a gift and we were thrilled to receive it. Rufus’ likeness has been painted twice now, and each time we’re honored that our little man inspired someone. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post we celebrate 8 wonderful years with Rufus this week, making this gift very timely. We’re humbled by the generosity and thoughtfulness. Thank you JB.

Picking out the right costume for our pups is never easy for me. I am personally attracted to costumes that emphasize the elongated bodies of the dachshund – like a skunk or caterpillar. However, Rufus won two Halloween costume contest events wearing his Mexican bandito outfit. It was actually one of the very first costumes I bought Rufus. I also think it was one of the best $30 investments I made since I’ve gotten a lot of wear from it. I use it for Cinco de Mayo events as well. So naturally Emily had to carry on the tradition (see below).
Final share today. Rufus was born on Aug 21. 2004; but we brought our baby boy home on Saturday night, Oct. 30, 2004. Rufus has been in our lives and care for 8 wonderful years. Rufus is my favorite Halloween present of all time. I’m not big on celebrating Halloween generally and this year we’re planning to keep it low-key. Nonetheless, Halloween will forever be a special time of year for me. While the occasion is often associated with candy, ghost stories and costumes; it reminds me of the day my life changed forever. It will always be the first day of mine and Rufus’ journey together. Happy Halloween!!!

It has been a wild and crazy dachshund weekend. I’m a huge advocate of doxie play dates and sleepovers. I believe they’re great for our dachshunds’ continued development and overall socialization. They’re also good for the human soul. Sleepovers allow us to temporarily enjoy a bigger pack without the long-term commitment of getting another dog. This weekend I hosted a total of six dachshunds. It’s not something I’m willing or able to do every weekend, but it is absolutely fun when I can. Here they are from left to right: Leo, Milo, Emily, Rufus, Ralphie and Polie.
