Dachshund Rescue of Los Angeles

I first met Tamara Pitman in February 2012, as a foster parent helping varied local rescues. After many years of serving other rescues organizations and spending a small fortune in the process, Pitman decided to created her own rescue endeavor: Dachshund Rescue of Los Angeles.

I’m a huge proponent of collaboration and for the last 14 months, Pitman and I have been working together to save and place dachshunds. She pulls them from shelters and I photograph them. Pitman and I do not share an exclusive relationship and I make my photo services available to any local dachshund rescue willing to work with my schedule and me. However, Pitman seems to truly appreciate the power of a good picture in permanently placing these precious pups looking for a new lease on life.

According to my loose calculations I have photographed about 65+ rescue dachshunds in the last 55 weeks, which averages to about 1 doxie a week. More than two thirds of them, were at the request and coordination of Pitman. In an attempt to help Pitman, I have allocated 10 books (of 102 Dachshunds) – for her personal fundraising. Each time a person gets a copy of the limited edition collector’s book 102 Dachshunds, $80 will be automatically donated to Pitman and her newly formed rescue (the balance is kept to cover shipping expenses and hard cost). It’s our goal to get her $800 so she can complete her 501c3 paperwork. I introduced Tasha, formerly Josie, when she was a mere rescue (in late March). And, I’m thrilled to report that she has been adopted and runs with her own pack of humans and doxies today. Her family says she is doing well in her new environment. It really warms the heart to hear news of another happy ending in our doxie community. I’m also beyond flattered that the family attributed their interest in Josie / Tasha in part because of my photographs. A good photograph goes a long way in getting these homeless pups adopted. Our good friend Seth Casteel goes around the country teaching this philosophy. As part of DOGS’ mission, I make my services available to all local dachshund rescues free of charge, because we want to live in a world where all doxies have good loving forever homes. If you have camera, don’t be shy about helping your local rescues and shelters. Even if it’s a simple compact point and shoot, you can still help. The point is we all can help, if inspired. As a celebration of Tasha’s success story, we’ll be showcasing the very beautiful longhair doxies all week along with her friends. She’s very photogenic so enjoy.

Kaia update

As many of you probably remember DOGS sponsored Kaia and helped with the cost of her back surgery and 6-month rehabilitation in late 2012. I got to spend last weekend with Kaia and found her to be well and walking. She’s a little wobbly at times, but for the most part, she walks like a regular dachshund would walk. It warms the heart to see her experiencing life again walking on all fours. Truly love a happy ending.

Behind the camera

Today is your weekly dose of Emily, my adorable smooth black and tan, and today I offer a little personal anecdote along with it. I absolutely enjoy photographing Emily and the camera loves her, but photographing Emily is completely a different experience than photographing Rufus – my red smooth doxie. Rufus is a great photo subject, in the sense that he takes direction very well and obeys commands easily. He is pretty prefect as a doxie model and together we can accomplish some complicated sessions. Emily, who hasn’t been doing this as long, doesn’t take direction as well as Rufus but gosh, she can certainly take a good picture when she wants to. Her black and tan coat pops against a variety of backdrops, her bright eyes are captivating and her natural smile keeps me wanting more. Photographing dachshunds is as unique as the dachshund I’m shooting, and not all dachshunds are alike – which is why I never grow tired of photographing them. Some folks ask, but don’t you ever want to photograph something else?! My answer (to date) remains a firm no. I’ve been photographing dachshunds exclusively for nearly 9 years and I have yet to grow bored with it – thanks to my very diverse photo subjects. Even Rufus and Emily are constantly changing – in their appearance, their attitude, their ability, etc. Their photos today are not the same as last year, and I predict they won’t be the same next year. As I grow as an artist and photographer, they evolve as well and together I think we make a great team. What do you think!?
