Emily is a barker. She barks when she’s happy; she barks when she’s scared; she barks when she wants to play; and she barks when she is meeting someone new. The barking can be slightly agitating for me personally, but I often try to understand the reason behind the bark. She barks at the back door when she needs to go outside, she barks at the water bowl when she is thirsty and it’s empty. The one time where I just let her bark to her heart’s content is at the dog parks. It never last more a minute or two (at any given time), but she loves to bark at the big dogs opposite the chain-link fence. Her bark does not appear to be mean; it’s not a growl with a lot of teeth and foam, but I imagine her barks are more of a dachshund dialogue. With my active imagination I often speculate that she’s questioning why the dog’s legs are so unusually long. Or if it’s a pretty dog with a nice full and fluffy coat, I imagine Emily is offering her praise. For this particular dog in the photographs, I imagine Emily is asking, “Where did you get that collar?! The colors really suit you.” What do you think she is saying?! Does you dachshund bark!?

My Frieda barks because as a doxie she must get in the last word! She barks at certain large, usually black dogs, typically black labs, standard poodles & boxers. She barks when someone dares to walk past her house & yard. Dori is pretty laid back, but will get into it if Frieda gets her riled up enough!!
I think Emily is barking “I’d Like To Get To Know You” (the old song by Spanky & Our Gang) 🙂 All the doxies I or my family have owned have been barkers. My Brandy is very territorial, she will bark at the doorbell or if she hears/sees anything outside the home. Once I was getting new homeowners insurance and the company had to do an outdoor inspection. I got a call from their office after the inspection, the secretary was “just checking” that I DID had a mini dachshund as the inspector told her there was a “loud, aggressive dog barking inside” LOL!! I told the secretary that she did ineded have a loud bark for a 10 lb. dog but, once inside, the inspector would have gotten “doggie kisses”…we both laughed! Blessings…Joy Fisher
You make me laugh! My mini is actually pretty quiet particularly when out of her own home. But she can be quite vocal when our min pin annoys her! She also “roos” when she wants our attention. It is so darn cute!
We have 3 barkers. NOTHING gets to pass by this house without the acknowledgement of the 3 Weens. Our Mini Vienna..2 1/2, she barks at the 2 boys to notify them that it is time to bark…She never really acknowledges what they are barking at..She loves to stir the pot and get them all wound up…but she is usually the first to set off the alarm that something is going on outside…And yes, it can be very annoying at times…Like 3am when the wind blows a branch and it scratches the siding of the house and all 3 have to go “SEE” what’s in the yard!
The picture above show me how very sweet Emily is…Look how they are smiling at each other…she is so beautiful Johnny!
Emily is so beautiful. Our dogs bark at any and everything.
