My two knuckleheads

Rufus and Emily. Rufus is often the pensive one. He sits and stares carefully surveying his territory regularly. Emily is the silly clown, always rolling around in the dirt and chasing after Rufus as he chases after the squirrels and birds. It’s really rather comical to see and experience. Rufus is Mr. Serious and Emily is Ms. Funny Girl. It’s also fun because Rufus always has his eye on me and Emily often has hers on him.  My two knuckleheads keep life entertaining for me. Hope the same is true for you and yours. Life with a doxie or two is always better than life without one. Happy Tuesday friends!

Pet ID for Me Tag discount

This is the final week of our June 2013 fundraising. I have asked you to buy T-shirts, raffle tickets and books, and I’m going to continue to ask you for one more week. However, as a token of my appreciation for the continued support and love, I’ve negotiated a special discount with our friends at PetIDforMe. I’m a huge fan of these tags because they allow us to arm our dogs with our complete contact information. The tag normally retails for $20, but for this week only, they have agreed to offer our fans and friends a promotional price of $9.99. You simply have to type in the word “DOXIE” in the discount coupon code section to redeem. PetIDforMe has been a longtime partner of ours and unlike previous promotions – where the DOGS logo was printed on one side of the tag, this time your dog’s photo and information will be on both sides; since we all know that’s what y’all really like. I personally negotiated the LuxeMutt and PetIDforMe discounts as my small way of saying, “thank you.” Remember it’s important to update your doxies’ collar and tags regularly, and I recommend you do it at least once a year. Our dachshunds’ tags are their first line of defense should they ever become lost. Their collars and tags are like a human’s wallet and driver’s license. You’d never leave home without your wallet and proper ID so why would your beloved dog??!! Enjoy. I just ordered Rufus and Emily’s new tags last night.  I only recommend and endorse products that I actually use myself.

DOGS exclusive discount

Yesterday we showed off Emily’s new Pink Poodle LuxeMutt collar, but I wanted to also remind folks Rufus has one too. I reserve Rufus’ for special occasions since I feel it’s a little too formal for everyday wear for him. However, Emily wears hers all the time every time. She’s a princess so it’s perfect that way. Point: I think both male and female doxies can wear a LuxeMutt bow-tie collar.

I’m also thrilled to announce that for a limited time only, our friends at LuxeMutt are extending a special DOGS exclusive discount for all of our fans and friends. Enter discount code – DOGSJOT on their website: http://www.luxemutt.com/; to receive 15% off any order (from their website only). The code will not work in the Etsy shop.

Happy LuxeMutt shopping! If you order a LuxeMutt collar, harness or leash, please be certain to take photos and share on our DOGS Facebook wall. We can’t wait to see some more sharp dressed hounds.

The discount is one more way we’re able to THANK YOU for all the support you regularly offer us. Enjoy.

A doxie in poodle pink

Emily got her first adult collar in April 2012, and after much deliberation we elected to go with a Lime Light LuxeMutt Bowtie leather collar. Despite some wear the collar is still good, but sometimes papa wants a change, and I was ready for something new after 14 months. We considered other collars, and there are several to choose from in the marketplace, but once again I found myself sticking with what works for us. However, I thought this time Emily would sport something a little more feminine so friends and strangers afar would know immediately that my darling Emily is a girl; which is why I picked a pretty Poodle Pink. Honestly I think Emily would look good in any of the LuxeMutt colors, and I’m very happy with my choice. The collar arrived Friday and we had to put it on right away. What do you think!? I think Emily is probably a LuxeMutt bowtie gal for life – or at least another 12+ months.

I love a good doxie headshot (even if it’s all nose) and a nice hound profile.  Of course one of my favorite models continues to be Rufus. Have a wonderful day friends from Rufus, Emily and all their doxie friends.

Dachshund lineup

Today’s featured photos are simply outtakes from a photo shoot earlier this year. To me they unintentionally look a little like a dachshund lineup, kind of like a police one. It’s a case of which doxie did it. However, the only crime these four are guilty of is being too darn cute for their own good. They’re sentenced to life with their humans where they will be being spoiled and loved. Have a good one friends.

Doxie daddies

Doxie Dads | June 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

I normally do not feature humans on this site; however, this past weekend our local meetup group LA Doxies had it’s monthly meetup / Father’s Day celebration. As a treat to those who attended I photographed the doxie dads with their hounds. When I got home I absolutely loved the diversity I had captured in relation to the dachshunds and their humans. Many continue to argue that the dachshund breed is such a popular one because it’s so varied: three coat types, two main sizes and multiple color combinations. In the composites you see evidence of this thinking, you see young and old, some with one doxie, others with two and a few with three or more and dachshunds all having different colors and coats. When I applied for my grant for the book 102 Dachshunds and got it, I asserted that dachshund community is a very eclectic one and some of us would never know each other if it wasn’t for the fact that we shared the love for the breed. Moreover, I suggested that when dachshund humans come together we quickly forget our differences – political, religious, social economic, etc. – and focus on the dogs, and I think that’s a very beautiful thing. If only the world could follow our example. What do you think?!

Dachshund Rescues: Danny and Reggie

Introducing Danny and Reggie. Danny is a smooth dapple piebald, which is a non-AKC recognized pattern, but still adorable I think. Reggie is a smooth red. Both males are a little shy at first, and both are looking for their forever families. Both doxie adoptions are being overseen by Dachshund Paws and Pals Rescue and interested folks should apply on-line. Please share with any prospective people looking to expand their pack. Thanks!

Happy 6th Birthday Kaia

Kaia & Rufus | January 2011. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Kaia has been a regular on this site, and before I got Emily Sue – my very own black and tan, I got to practice with Kaia for two years. Bonds are formed: doxie to doxie and human to doxie. Rufus and I love Kaia, and we have a discernable friendship today that has been years in the making. I’ve watched Kaia evolve from a cantankerous dachshund to a well-socialized, better-behaved dachshund. I have witnessed her go from able body to paralyzed and back again to able body; talk about an emotional rollercoaster. When I look back at the pictures from 2011, I’m reminded of the early friendship Rufus, Kaia and I shared. Sunday was Kaia birthday and not only do we celebrate Kaia, but I want to celebrate the friendship she has offered Rufus and me (and now Emily). I got to chance to see Kaia yesterday in person and it had been a few months since we last saw each other. However, the moment she heard my voice and saw me, she squealed with excitement and to a dachshund dad, those sounds just make the heart burst. Just like people make indelible impressions on each other, I believe the same is true for dachshunds and humans. I think Rufus and I are better for knowing Kaia and wish our friend a very Happy Belated Birthday! May there still be many more birthdays and pictures to come.

Happy Father’s Day

Rufus | June 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Rufus | June 2013. Photo by: Johnny Ortez-Tibbels ©

Fathers come in many different forms. We have our biological fathers whom we can thank for our very existence and their DNA. Many of us also have male role models in our lives that nurture us, encourage us, teach us and love us. Today is that day when we acknowledge them all for their contribution to who we are. Lastly, we must not forget all of our doxie daddies. They can’t say it with words, but if they could, they might say something like this… presenting Rufus and Emily’s 2013 Father’s Day cards. Happy Father’s Day to all!
